Chapter 7 - THE NINETY-FOUR-SECOND CALLMiles opened his complete phone records voluntarily.
The official log showed no incoming call from Jasper.
Yet Jasper’s phone recorded a ninety-four-second connection to Miles’s number.
A telecommunications specialist found the explanation.
Miles’s office system had been configured to redirect selected calls through an encrypted secondary line. Only calls from Jasper were affected.
The routing rule had been installed three months earlier.
Miles claimed he knew nothing about it.
His assistant denied creating it.
The missing investigator, Calvin Ross, had administrator access to the office network.
Lena issued a warrant for Calvin.
His apartment was empty. His bank account had been drained the day after Jasper died. Surveillance showed him entering a bus station with one suitcase and leaving through a service exit without boarding any bus.
Inside his apartment, detectives found photographs of Jasper, Frederick, Grant, Hazel, and Miles.
One image showed Miles meeting Grant at a diner.
The photograph had been taken six weeks before Jasper’s crash.
Miles finally admitted the meeting.
“Jasper asked me to approach Grant quietly. We believed Grant might cooperate against Frederick.”
“Why hide that?” Hazel asked.
“Because Grant’s daughter was being threatened.”
“You allowed us to believe you had never dealt with him.”
“I was protecting a source.”
“Protecting him from whom?”
Miles hesitated.
“Calvin.”
The investigator Jasper hired had begun selling information to both sides. Jasper suspected Calvin told Frederick about the residence trust while telling Jasper that Grant planned to confess.
Miles believed Calvin installed the call forwarding and answered Jasper after the crash.
“But Jasper recognized the voice,” Hazel said.
“He had worked with Calvin for months.”
“Why didn’t he say Calvin’s name?”
“He may not have had time.”
The reconstructed call contained more audio than the first recovery.
After the unknown man asked about the folder, Jasper whispered:
“You drafted the wrong deed.”
The man answered:
“You signed what I needed.”
Jasper said:
“Miles will find you.”
The response came after a pause.
“Miles already chose.”
The wording did not prove the man was Miles.
It suggested Miles had made a decision Jasper feared.
Lena asked what that decision might have been.
Miles admitted Jasper wanted to take all evidence directly to state investigators. Miles advised him to delay until the children and Hazel could be protected.
“Frederick’s creditors included violent people,” Miles said. “A public filing could have exposed the family.”
“Jasper died during the delay,” Hazel replied.
“Yes.”
“Did you tell Frederick when Jasper planned to meet the investigator?”
“No.”
“Did Calvin know?”
“Yes.”
Miles’s caution may have been reasonable.
It also created the opening in which Jasper was killed.
A second forensic report arrived.
Jasper’s car had been deliberately altered before the crash. Grant’s claimed sensor tampering could not have caused the failure.
Someone else entered the garage afterward and damaged a critical component.
The hidden porch camera showed Grant leaving the property the previous night at 9:12.
A second figure entered at 11:03.
The person wore a charcoal overcoat and carried a leather briefcase.
The face remained hidden.
At 11:17, the figure left through the side gate.
Miles’s vehicle entered a toll road thirty miles away at 11:20, making it nearly impossible for him to have been at the Beaumont house.
His coat and briefcase could have been copied.
Or another person from his office used them deliberately.
The figure paused beneath the porch camera before leaving.
A hand reached upward.
On the ring finger was a wide silver band engraved with the emblem of Miles’s law school.
Miles looked down.
He wore the same ring.
Then he removed it and placed it on the table.
“My investigator had one too,” he said. “I gave it to him when he became a partner.”
Calvin Ross was no longer merely a missing employee.
He was the only other person who possessed Miles’s office access, legal knowledge, clothing, and distinctive ring.
Then Toby spoke from the doorway.
“I saw Calvin at Dad’s funeral.”
Everyone turned.
