Chapter 9 - AVERY’S LAST CONFESSIONAvery asked for Hazel before entering a formal plea.
She looked smaller without Frederick beside her. Her elegant funeral clothes had been replaced with a county-issued uniform. The hand that tore away Hazel’s wedding ring now shook against the interview table.
“I knew about the successor clause,” she said.
Hazel sat across from her with Lena and a state prosecutor present.
“How?”
“Frederick found a copy in Jasper’s office.”
“When?”
“Three weeks before the crash.”
Frederick assumed Miles had secretly arranged to take control of the company through Hazel. That was why he accelerated the forged transfer and demanded Jasper sign away the house.
“He believed Miles planned to destroy him,” Avery said.
“Did he order Grant to damage Jasper’s car?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know?”
“I knew Grant had a key. I thought he was taking documents.”
“You keep saying you thought.”
“I know.”
Avery admitted seeing the second person enter Jasper’s garage later that night.
She had returned to the house after realizing Frederick’s plan was escalating. From her parked car, she saw a man wearing Miles’s overcoat leave through the side gate.
“Was it Miles?”
“No.”
“Calvin?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Avery began crying.
“Grant’s daughter, Emily.”
Emily Ellis had worked as Miles’s legal assistant for eighteen months.
She possessed office access, knew Jasper’s schedule, and had watched her father become trapped between Frederick and Calvin.
Miles stared when Lena informed him.
“Emily resigned the morning after the crash.”
“Where is she?”
“She said she was moving to Boston.”
No travel record showed she left Vermont.
Avery said Emily approached her after Jasper’s funeral. She demanded Hazel’s ring because she believed the memory card proved Grant intended to cooperate.
“Emily said the evidence would send her father to prison.”
“So you stole it for her?”
“I thought she would destroy only Grant’s statements.”
“You tore my wedding ring from my hand while my son was bleeding.”
Avery’s voice collapsed.
“Yes.”
The hidden porch camera showed Avery walking toward the black SUV moments before police arrived. She passed a small object through the rear window.
The SUV escaped before the ring was recovered.
Avery had given Emily the empty inner sleeve, unaware Toby had removed the card.
Emily was the driver waiting in the driveway.
She was also the figure who disappeared behind the house when the sirens approached.
“Why did she return after the funeral?” Hazel asked.
“She said Jasper had hidden one more recording beneath the porch.”
“What recording?”
Avery shook her head.
“She called it the original.”
The camera files Miles received were digital copies uploaded through Jasper’s account. An original local recorder remained somewhere inside the house.
It might contain footage erased from the cloud.
Footage from the night Jasper’s car was altered.
Police searched the porch again.
Behind the red camera light, technicians found a second lens aimed not toward the front steps but along the side gate and garage entrance.
Its local storage drive was missing.
Emily had taken it after the funeral.
An alert reached Lena during the interview.
Grant Ellis had disappeared from protective custody.
A false transport order instructed deputies to release him to federal agents. The credentials came from Miles’s legal network.
Security footage showed Emily escorting her father from the building.
They left in another black SUV.
Before departing, Emily handed the desk officer a sealed envelope addressed to Hazel.
Inside was a photograph from the missing porch recorder.
It showed the person entering Jasper’s garage at 11:03.
The face was clearly visible.
Miles Whitaker.
Hazel stared at the image.
The toll-road record placing him thirty miles away had been generated using his vehicle’s electronic tag.
Someone else could have driven the car.
On the back of the photograph, Emily had written:
