Chapter 8 - Margaret’s Storage UnitElena refused to let Rachel go alone.
Instead, police surrounded the storage facility while Rachel entered wearing a concealed microphone.
Unit 318 opened from the inside.
Michael stood beneath a bare fluorescent light.
He resembled Franklin around the eyes but carried none of his father’s polished confidence. A scar crossed his left cheek. His limp was more pronounced than the footage showed.
Behind him sat an empty wheelchair.
Margaret was not there.
“Where is she?” Rachel asked.
“Safe.”
“You sent a photograph.”
“It was taken yesterday.”
“My grandmother died.”
“Your family held a funeral.”
“That is not an answer.”
Michael closed the unit door.
Margaret discovered Diane and Franklin had been moving trust money through fake pediatric charities. She planned to remove them from every family account.
Dr. Moore declared her cognitively impaired.
Diane obtained emergency guardianship.
Franklin announced Margaret’s death after transferring her to a private care residence under another name.
Michael found her eighteen months later.
“You rescued her?” Rachel asked.
“I moved her before Diane’s lawyers could change facilities.”
“Then why not contact me?”
“Marcus monitored your finances.”
Rachel stiffened.
“Marcus was auditing the foundation.”
“He was also receiving reports from Franklin.”
“That is not true.”
Michael opened a metal case.
Inside were payments from Bell Media to Marcus’s consulting company.
The descriptions read:
Family risk assessment.
Rachel compliance review.
Trust-transfer strategy.
Marcus’s signature appeared on every invoice.
Rachel felt the floor tilt beneath her.
“He was investigating them.”
“Then why did Franklin pay him?”
“Because my father tried to make the investigation look compromised.”
Michael gave her an audio recording.
Franklin spoke with Marcus six months earlier.
“You either help us restructure the trust or I tell Rachel you knew her grandmother was alive.”
Marcus answered, “I will not help you steal from Lily.”
“You already signed the consulting agreement.”
“I signed before I knew what you were hiding.”
“You accepted the money.”
“I returned it.”
“Not all of it.”
Rachel knew Marcus had hidden financial trouble from her the previous year. He claimed a client refused payment.
Had the missing money come from Franklin?
Michael continued.
“Your husband knew Margaret survived.”
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
“He said he needed proof she was held illegally before exposing her location.”
Another protector choosing secrecy.
Another loved one deciding Rachel could tolerate one more lie.
“Where is Margaret now?”
Michael looked toward the police microphone hidden beneath Rachel’s collar.
“You didn’t come alone.”
The outer doors opened.
Police entered the corridor.
Michael did not run.
He raised both hands.
“I wanted them to find me.”
Elena moved inside.
“Where is Margaret?”
“Dr. Moore took her.”
Michael had arranged to move Margaret to Rachel’s home after the party. The birthday chaos was supposed to distract Diane long enough.
Then he learned Lily would be sedated.
He tried to stop the plan without revealing himself.
When Vanessa administered the second dose, Michael panicked.
He carried Lily outside, intending to take her to the hospital.
Franklin intercepted him near the driveway and threatened Margaret.
The dumpster became a temporary hiding place while Michael tried to locate the elderly woman.
He placed the bracelet evidence on Lily and scheduled the dumpster pickup himself.
Rachel stared at him.
“You scheduled the incinerator.”
“I changed the destination to a police impound route.”
“The driver’s order said incinerator.”
“Someone changed it back.”
“Who?”
Michael looked toward the hidden microphone.
“Marcus.”
Elena restrained him before Rachel could respond.
“You are accusing the man whose identity you stole.”
“Yes.”
“Why would Marcus destroy Lily?”
“He didn’t want to destroy Lily. He wanted to destroy what I hid on her bracelet.”
Rachel called Marcus.
No answer.
Hospital security reported that he had left Lily’s floor twenty minutes earlier after receiving a message about Margaret.
His car remained in the garage.
A hallway camera showed him entering a maintenance stairwell with Franklin.
Neither man had returned.
Then Lily’s bracelet transmitted a new location.
The signal moved beneath the hospital.
