Chapter 9 - Beneath the HospitalThe service tunnel connected St. Anne’s Hospital to an older medical archive and a private rehabilitation building owned by the Bell Foundation.

Elena led officers downstairs.

Rachel remained with Lily until Dr. Price promised a guard would stay directly beside the bed.

Then she followed.

The bracelet signal stopped beneath a locked records room.

Police forced the door.

Franklin lay on the floor, conscious but bleeding from a cut near his temple.

Marcus was gone.

The evidence bag containing Lily’s bracelet lay open beside him.

The micro-storage chip had been removed.

Franklin gripped Rachel’s sleeve.

“Marcus attacked me.”

“Why were you with him?”

“He said Michael contacted him.”

“Did you change the dumpster route?”

“No.”

“You paid for it.”

“Michael placed the order.”

“With Marcus’s signature.”

“Michael forged it.”

Every answer redirected blame.

Elena asked where Marcus went.

Franklin pointed toward the rehabilitation building.

“He took the chip.”

Rachel checked the corridor camera.

Marcus appeared carrying the evidence sleeve.

He looked directly at the lens before covering it.

That was not the movement of a frightened innocent man.

Rachel called him again.

This time, he answered.

“Where are you?”

“Rachel, listen to me. The chip contains more than banking records.”

“You stole police evidence.”

“Because Elena’s supervisor works for the Bell Foundation.”

Elena looked at the phone.

“That is convenient.”

Marcus continued.

“Michael built a release program. If the chip enters the hospital evidence network, every protected medical file in the foundation archive becomes public.”

“Why would he do that?”

“To expose Diane. But the files include children, abuse survivors, and families in protective housing.”

Marcus claimed he removed the chip before the automated upload completed.

He was taking it to an independent federal investigator.

“Why bring Franklin?”

“I didn’t. He followed me and tried to take it.”

Franklin shouted from the floor.

“He is lying!”

Rachel closed her eyes.

Truth had become a weapon every person claimed to carry alone.

“Come back,” she told Marcus.

“I can’t.”

“Then I cannot protect you.”

“I’m protecting Lily.”

“She is upstairs asking for you.”

Silence.

That reached him.

“Tell her I love her.”

“Tell her yourself.”

The line disconnected.

Elena traced the call to the rehabilitation building’s third floor.

Officers entered.

The facility appeared closed, yet one room remained active.

Inside sat Margaret Bell.

Alive.

Her white hair had been cut short. A medical monitor tracked her pulse. She stared at Rachel with full recognition.

“My girl.”

Rachel crossed the room and held her.

“You’re alive.”

“Diane told everyone my mind was gone.”

Margaret’s voice was weak but clear.

“Marcus found me six months ago.”

Rachel stepped back.

“He knew.”

“He wanted to move me. I asked him to wait.”

“Why?”

“Because Franklin controlled the private judge who approved my guardianship. If Marcus removed me without proof, they would call it kidnapping.”

Marcus had hidden Margaret at her own request.

But he had also accepted payments from Franklin while gathering evidence.

Margaret did not fully trust him.

“I gave him the original trust ledger,” she said.

The ledger proved every stolen transfer and listed the family member responsible for each.

Marcus now carried it digitally on the missing chip.

“Where is he going?”

“To the roof.”

A helicopter approached through the rain.

Margaret looked toward the ceiling.

“Franklin’s people are coming for the ledger.”

The roof camera activated on Elena’s tablet.

Marcus stood beneath the landing lights holding the chip.

Across from him waited Dr. Moore.

Beside the doctor was Diane.

She had somehow left police supervision.

Diane held a small child by the hand.

Emma.

Vanessa’s daughter.

👉 Margaret confirmed Marcus had hidden the truth at her request, but Diane reached the roof using Emma as leverage to recover Lily’s evidence.
