Chapter 12 - the brother beside the groom

Gavin Moore answered on the second ring.
“Grace?”
She listened to his voice.
The voice of her little brother.
The boy she protected when their parents fought.
The man who held Sophie in the hospital the day she was born.
“Where are you?”
“At home.”
Lena signaled technicians.
Gavin’s phone location matched his house.
Grace kept talking.
“Did you know David was investigating Hollis?”
Silence.
“What?”
“Answer.”
“No.”
“Did you know Richard before I met him?”
Another pause.
“No.”
Grace closed her eyes.
She knew when Gavin lied.
He always repeated the question in a slightly slower voice.
He had not done it this time.
His answer had come too fast.
“Gavin.”
“What’s happening?”
“Harold wrote your initials before someone shot him.”
Long silence.
Then:
“Grace, get Sophie and leave the police station.”
Lena moved closer.
“Why?”
“Because someone is listening.”
“Who?”
“I can’t say.”
Grace’s anger flared.
“Everyone keeps saying they can’t say. David died. Sophie was almost taken. Tell me now.”
Gavin’s voice broke.
“I knew Richard.”
Grace felt sick.
“How long?”
“Before the fundraiser.”
“How long?”
“Seven years.”
The same period Richard had watched Grace and David.
“What were you doing with him?”
“Helping David.”
Grace stared through the glass.
“David told you?”
“Yes.”
“Why not me?”
“Because he wanted you outside it.”
“You both decided that for me.”
“Yes.”
Grace hated them for that.
Loved them.
Hated them again.
“Are you the director?”
“No.”
“Who is?”
“I don’t know his real name.”
“Harold wrote G.M.”
“Not for me.”
“Then who?”
“Graham Mercer.”
Lena immediately searched.
Graham Mercer.
Father of Andrew Mercer.
Deceased twelve years.
Or supposedly deceased.
Another dead identity.
Gavin continued.
“Graham was Arthur’s financial adviser. After Arthur disappeared, someone started issuing orders using Graham’s credentials.”
“So Harold meant Graham Mercer.”
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
“Because David found the same initials years ago.”
Grace exhaled.
Her brother was not cleared.
But the initials had another meaning.
“Why are you telling me to leave?”
“Because there’s someone inside Richmond police who reports directly to Graham.”
“Captain Dale?”
“No.”
“He’s dead.”
“I know.”
“Who?”
Gavin whispered:
“Lena.”
Grace looked across the room at Detective Avery.
Lena saw her expression.
“What?”
Grace did not answer.
Gavin continued.
“Not Lena personally.”
Grace breathed again.
“Then what?”
“Her credentials.”
“What does that mean?”
“Someone has been using Detective Avery’s access to search sealed files for years.”
Lena heard now through the speaker.
Her face hardened.
“Who?”
Gavin said:
“I think Samuel.”
The room became silent.
Lena’s father.
Richard.
Using her police credentials.
“Impossible,” Lena said.
Gavin heard.
“He had copies of old academy login tokens. David found them.”
“My credentials changed.”
“Someone kept renewing access.”
Lena immediately ordered an internal audit.
Results came fast.
Her account had opened classified Hollis-related files on nights she was off duty.
Some access came from inside headquarters.
Some remote.
One session occurred during her vacation in Florida.
Someone had been impersonating her digitally.
“Why?” Grace asked.
Lena understood.
“To monitor investigations without leaving another identity.”
Samuel had used his daughter’s name as protection.
Again.
Gavin provided an address.
A storage facility in Ashland.
“David and Samuel used it together.”
Police entered.
Inside were recent supplies.
Richard had been there after the wedding.
A handwritten note waited for Grace.
I AM SORRY ABOUT SOPHIE.
I LEFT THE BOX OPEN BECAUSE I NEEDED YOU TO STOP THE WEDDING.
I DID NOT KNOW ANDREW WOULD TRY TO TAKE HER BEFORE I COULD REACH HIM.
Grace read it.
Then:
DAVID KNEW WHO GRAHAM REALLY WAS.
FIND THE WEDDING VIDEO FROM 2019.
Grace frowned.
Whose wedding?
Gavin knew.
His own.
He married four years earlier.
The video archive was in cloud storage.
They watched.
Guests.
Music.
Speeches.
David had already been dead three years.
Richard was not officially part of the family yet.
But he appeared briefly in the background.
So did Harold.
Andrew.
Captain Dale.
And an elderly stranger Sophie recognized from the Rosefield reflection.
Arthur.
Then the groom’s father stood to toast Gavin.
Grace stared.
Her brother’s father-in-law.
Charles Whitmore.
Successful investment executive.
Publicly harmless.
Sophie pointed.
“He has the black ring.”
Charles wore the Hollis signet.
Lena searched corporate history.
Before changing his name thirty years earlier, Charles Whitmore had been:
Graham Mercer.
Officially dead under his original identity.
Alive under another.
He was not just a guest at Grace’s wedding.
He was family.
Gavin’s wife, Claire, was his daughter.
Grace called Gavin.
No answer.
Then Claire called.
Crying.
“Grace, Gavin’s gone.”
“What?”
“Someone took him.”
A message had been left on their kitchen counter.
BRING SOPHIE TO THE WAREHOUSE OR GAVIN DIES.
Grace stared at her daughter.

The network had stopped hiding.
👉 The man directing the Hollis operation was Grace’s brother’s father-in-law—and now he had kidnapped Gavin to force Sophie into the open.
