Chapter 13 - why they wanted Sophie

Grace refused immediately.

“No.”

The police expected negotiation.

Grace did not negotiate.

“You are not using my daughter as bait.”

Lena agreed.

“We won’t.”

Gavin’s life mattered.

Sophie’s life mattered too.

No adult would trade one child for another family member.

The demand itself revealed something.

“They specifically want Sophie,” Lena said.

“Why?”

Not Grace.

Not the warehouse deed.

Not Richard.

Sophie.

Michael studied old Hollis files.

“Arthur selected heirs young.”

Grace looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

“He trained Samuel as a child.”

“You think Graham wants Sophie for the same reason?”

“Maybe.”

Sophie was listening despite Grace’s attempts to exclude her.

“Because I found the papers?”

Michael looked at her.

“Because you figured out what adults missed.”

Sophie hated the answer.

Grace hated it more.

Then Lena discovered another reason.

David’s trust.

The warehouse did not transfer to a spouse after Grace’s death.

It transferred to Sophie.

If Grace became incapacitated, Sophie’s custodial trust held controlling interest.

Richard marrying Grace could access the property temporarily.

But permanent control eventually belonged to Sophie.

“She’s the legal endpoint,” Lena said.

Grace felt sick.

“That’s why they wanted her.”

“Partly.”

Partly.

There was another layer.

Gavin managed to send one message from his smartwatch before it was disabled.

Not words.

A photograph.

A concrete wall.

A yellow stripe.

Michael recognized it.

“Old Hollis freight terminal.”

Police surrounded the location.

No Gavin.

Only a recorded message from Graham.

Charles Whitmore appeared on screen.

Calm.

Well dressed.

“Grace, your family has survived because we allowed it.”

She stared.

“You killed David.”

“No.”

“Your people did.”

“Yes.”

No denial.

“Why Sophie?”

Graham smiled.

“Because Samuel changed the succession.”

Michael went still.

“What succession?”

Graham continued.

“Arthur chose Samuel as operational heir years ago.”

Richard.

Not Michael.

Not Arthur’s biological sons.

Samuel.

“Samuel refused.”

Grace listened.

“So Arthur created another option.”

A childhood photograph appeared.

Lena.

Samuel’s biological daughter.

“Lena was first.”

Detective Avery went pale.

Graham continued.

“Margaret kept her outside the system.”

Then a photograph of Sophie.

“Sophie became viable when Samuel joined the Moore operation.”

Grace looked confused.

“She isn’t related to him.”

“No,” Michael said.

“Succession isn’t biological.”

Graham smiled.

“It is behavioral.”

Arthur’s system selected people based on intelligence, adaptability, willingness to hold secrets, ability to manipulate identities.

Sophie had unknowingly passed their tests.

Finding the box.

Photographing documents.

Hiding copies.

Publicly interrupting the wedding.

Evading Andrew.

“She is thirteen,” Grace whispered.

“So was Samuel when Arthur began training him.”

Richard had been trying to prevent history from repeating.

That explained his panic.

His use of Sophie was still wrong.

But he may have believed exposing the papers publicly would make her too visible to disappear quietly.

Graham ended with:

“Bring Sophie, and Gavin walks away.”

Grace looked at Lena.

“No.”

They needed another plan.

Richard provided it.

A burner phone called Lena.

His voice.

“Graham doesn’t have Gavin at the warehouse.”

“Where?”

“Old Hollis courthouse records building.”

“How do you know?”

“Lauren is inside his network.”

Grace stared.

Lauren had spent years infiltrating.

Richard and Lauren were working together.

“Why didn’t you come to us?”

“Because someone keeps leaking your locations.”

“Who?”

Richard paused.

“I know now.”

“Name.”

“Harold.”

Lena frowned.

“He was shot.”

“By Graham because Harold tried to defect.”

“So he isn’t the leak.”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Richard hesitated.

“Michael.”

Michael was standing twenty feet away.

He heard.

His face changed.

“No.”

Richard continued through speaker.

“Michael has been reporting movement to Graham for years.”

Michael stepped toward the phone.

“He’s lying.”

Richard heard.

“Ask him why Arthur let him live.”

Michael froze.

Everyone noticed.

Grace stared.

“Michael?”

He looked toward the door.

Lena drew her weapon.

“Don’t.”

Michael stopped.

His eyes filled with something that looked like shame.

“I was trying to keep Samuel alive.”

“How?”

“By giving Graham enough information to believe I was useful.”

“You gave him our locations?”

“Not Sophie’s.”

“Gavin?”

Michael said nothing.

Grace understood.

“You gave him Gavin.”

Michael closed his eyes.

“I didn’t know they’d take him.”

History repeated.

Everyone claimed they didn’t know what the network would do.

Grace was done accepting that.

Lena arrested Michael for obstruction.

Richard sent the courthouse location.

Tactical teams moved.

Inside, they found Gavin alive.

Bound but unharmed.

Graham was gone.

On a desk beside Gavin was an old photograph of Samuel at thirteen.

On the back:

THE FIRST SON FAILED.

THE GIRL WILL NOT.

Sophie stared.

Then noticed one detail in the photograph.

Beside teenage Samuel stood another boy.

Same age.

Same face.

A second Samuel.

Michael had claimed Samuel arrived alone at Hollis House.

He had lied.

Richard had a twin too.

👉 Sophie’s kidnapping was meant to turn her into the next Hollis heir—but an old photograph revealed Richard had an identical twin no one had mentioned.
