Chapter 8

The ambulance lights appeared beyond the school gate without sirens.

Marcus had planned that too.

No spectacle.

No flashing panic for Maya to interpret as disaster.

Just help arriving.

Two paramedics entered with calm movements and soft voices. They assessed Maya carefully, asking about her breathing, her eyes, her skin, whether she swallowed any paint, whether she felt dizzy.

Caleb answered what he could.

Maya answered the rest in tiny fragments.

Principal Shore hovered near the doorway until Marcus looked at her.

“Give them space.”

She stepped back.

Grant muttered, “This is ridiculous.”

The nearest investigator turned.

Grant shut his mouth.

Maya looked toward him and began breathing faster again.

Caleb immediately shifted, blocking her view.

“Look at me.”

She tried.

“Not him. Me.”

Her eyes found his.

“You’re safe right now.”

“Am I in trouble?”

“No.”

“But Principal Shore said—”

“She was wrong.”

Maya stared at him like that possibility had never fully occurred to her.

Adults at Ashbourne were not supposed to be wrong.

They were supposed to be polished, educated, donor-approved, and final.

Caleb brushed a paint-heavy strand away from her cheek with the back of his knuckle, as gently as he could.

“Grown-ups can be wrong. Expensive schools can be wrong. Boys with phones can be wrong.”

Maya’s lips trembled.

“Was I wrong to come here?”

That question pierced him deeper than anything Grant had said.

Caleb shook his head.

“No. They were wrong to make you pay for being here.”

Marcus heard that too.

His expression softened for half a second before returning to focus.

The forensic technician sealed the paint bucket.

Another investigator photographed Grant’s phone from a distance and documented the model without touching it.

Principal Shore stepped toward Marcus.

“May I call our legal counsel?”

“Yes,” Marcus said.

Relief crossed her face.

“After you confirm no staff member is accessing security footage or student devices.”

The relief vanished.

Caleb looked toward the security camera.

For the first time, he wondered how many other children had learned to stay quiet in that courtyard.
