Chapter 4 - THE DEAD ASSISTANT’S COMPUTER Colin denied entering the house.
He said Noah was traumatized and confusing him with Daniel. He volunteered fingerprints, clothing records, and his vehicle location.
His car had remained in his garage during the break-in.
His phone had stayed at home.
Everything suggested he had been nowhere near Rachel’s property.
Then Quinn checked the black SUV that rescued Vanessa.
It belonged to Rachel’s company, but traffic cameras showed temporary dealer plates covering its real registration.
The underlying plate belonged to Colin’s dead assistant, Meredith Shaw.
Meredith had supposedly lost control of her car during a rainstorm. Her vehicle caught fire before paramedics arrived. Dental records confirmed her identity.
But her old access credentials remained active.
Someone used them to enter Colin’s office network, unlock Rachel’s SUV, and erase the house-security logs.
“Either Meredith was involved before her death,” Quinn said, “or someone deliberately preserved her digital identity.”
Police searched Meredith’s apartment, which had remained sealed by her family. Behind a false panel in her desk, they found photographs of Daniel and Vanessa meeting in hotel lobbies, restaurants, and parking garages.
Meredith had been investigating them.
Her notes showed that Colin ordered her to review suspicious transfers involving Noah’s trust. Weeks later, she discovered that the transfer instructions originated inside Colin’s own law firm.
She began copying records.
Then she died.
The final file on her laptop was a draft email addressed to Rachel.
Daniel is not the only person using your signatures. Do not confront Colin until you see the bathroom recording.
Rachel read the sentence repeatedly.
“What bathroom recording?”
No camera had been found inside the locked bathroom.
Quinn reopened the 911 audio.
Beneath Rachel’s breathing and Daniel’s pounding, technicians isolated a faint electronic beep every ten seconds.
The sound came from Noah’s toy car.
He had brought it into the bathroom.
The toy’s internal camera automatically backed up short clips to a private account whenever it connected to the house Wi-Fi.
The missing memory card contained the full video, but several fragments might still exist online.
Noah remembered the account password because his grandfather had made it easy:

The first recovered clip showed Rachel and Noah entering the bathroom. Rachel locked the door, collapsed beside the sink, and called 911.
The second showed Daniel’s arm breaking through the wood.
The third was recorded before they reached the bathroom.
Rachel appeared in the dark hallway, struggling to walk while Daniel dragged her by one wrist. Vanessa followed with the suitcase.
Behind Vanessa stood another man.
Only his polished shoes and lower coat were visible.
He carried Rachel’s smartphone and spoke calmly.
“Keep the call short. Once the transfer clears, the house must look like she did this herself.”
Rachel recognized the voice.
Colin.
Quinn ordered his immediate arrest.
Officers reached his law office within eleven minutes.
It was empty.
A burner phone remained on his desk beside a photograph of Meredith’s burned car.
The screen displayed one outgoing message to Vanessa:
The child made a backup. Take him before Quinn finds it.
Rachel looked through the hospital-room glass.
Noah was no longer in his bed.
