Chapter 7 - VANESSA’S ORIGINAL NAME Vanessa confessed the next morning.
Her legal name was Vanessa Shaw.
Meredith Shaw had been her older sister.
They stopped using the same surname publicly after Vanessa entered college. Meredith feared Colin would use family connections to control them both.
Meredith worked inside his law firm to gather evidence. Vanessa entered Rachel’s life from another direction.
Their original plan was to expose Colin.
Rachel stared through the interview-room glass.
“You became my best friend as part of an investigation?”
“At first.”
“You handled my finances.”
“To trace the stolen royalties.”
“You slept with my husband.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“That wasn’t part of the plan.”
Rachel almost laughed at the absurdity.
Vanessa had discovered Daniel moving money from Noah’s trust. Instead of warning Rachel, she approached him and claimed she wanted a share.
Daniel believed she was helping him steal.
Vanessa told herself the affair allowed her to gather evidence.
Then she began wanting the money too.
“I stopped knowing which part was an act,” she whispered.
“When did Meredith die?”
“She didn’t.”
Quinn leaned forward.
Vanessa explained that the burned car contained a body supplied through one of Colin’s fraudulent identity cases. Meredith staged her death after discovering Colin intended to kill her.
She continued communicating with Vanessa through encrypted messages.
“Where is she now?”
“I don’t know. She stopped answering the night Daniel attacked Rachel.”
Meredith may have been the person who remotely opened Vanessa’s patrol-car door. She may also have unlocked the hospital access system.
“Did she order you to take Noah?” Rachel asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
“Colin used her code.”
The identities had become weapons anyone with sufficient access could wear.
Quinn located Meredith through a message hidden inside the toy-car backup. It directed Rachel to a storage facility near the airport.
Rachel and Quinn entered unit 214 under armed protection.
Meredith sat inside surrounded by copied legal files and computer servers.
She was alive, thin, and exhausted.
Vanessa began crying when she saw her.
Meredith did not embrace her.
“You chose Daniel,” she said.
“I was trying to stay close.”
“You stayed so close you became him.”
Vanessa lowered her head.
Meredith handed Rachel the complete patent ledger.
Colin had stolen more than sixty million dollars over sixteen years. Daniel’s transfer represented only the latest withdrawal.
She also produced medical records from Rachel’s father’s final illness.
His cancer diagnosis had been fabricated.
He suffered organ failure caused by repeated exposure to a toxic industrial compound.
The compound had been delivered through supplements authorized by Colin’s private physician.
“You can prove he was murdered?” Rachel asked.
“I can prove someone poisoned him. I cannot prove who administered it.”
One security video showed Colin delivering the supplements to Rachel’s childhood home.
Another showed Daniel’s mother collecting them.
Rachel had never met Daniel at the time.
But their families were connected before the marriage.
Daniel’s mother worked as Colin’s estate nurse during Rachel’s father’s final months.
She later introduced Daniel to Rachel at a charity fundraiser.
The marriage may have been arranged from the beginning.
Daniel had been positioned beside Rachel years before Noah inherited the patent rights.
Meredith opened one final file.
It contained an adoption document.
Rachel’s father had not created the trust merely because Noah was his grandson.
He named Noah as the patent heir based on a sealed paternity finding.
Rachel stared at the report.
Daniel was not Noah’s biological father.
The listed father’s name had been removed.
