Chapter 1

Wealthy Mother-in-Law Humiliates Her Until Federal Investigators Enter the Family Dinner.
Evelyn Harper sat on the polished marble floor of the private dining room with salad dressing dripping from the front of her black evening gown.
Crystal chandeliers glowed above cream tablecloths, wineglasses, silverware, and floral centerpieces that looked too elegant for the cruelty happening beneath them.
The overturned salad bowl lay beside her knee.
Lettuce clung to her shoulder.
Across from her, Beatrice Ashcroft remained seated in her glittering dark-gold gown, one gold heel extended, wineglass raised, diamonds flashing under the warm light.
She pressed the pointed toe of her heel against Evelyn’s shoulder, stopping her from standing.
“Try showing some elegance for once, Evelyn.”
Several relatives looked away.
Graham Ashcroft, Evelyn’s husband, sat beside his mother in a black tuxedo and laughed behind his hand.
Not loudly enough to seem monstrous.
Just loudly enough for Evelyn to know he enjoyed it.
Evelyn looked up at Beatrice.
She did not cry.
That disappointed Beatrice.
Evelyn knocked the heel away, planted one hand against the marble, and rose slowly.
Salad dressing slid down her gown.
Graham’s smile widened.
“Don’t turn Mom’s little joke into another scene.”
Evelyn looked at him until his smile became uncertain.
Then she reached into her evening bag and removed her phone.
Her thumb pressed one concealed contact.
Her eyes stayed on Beatrice.
“Everything is ready.”
The room shifted.
Beatrice’s wineglass lowered slightly.
Graham straightened in his chair.
The double doors opened.
A federal investigator in a charcoal suit entered carrying a sealed folder. Two more investigators followed behind her.
Every conversation died.
Silverware stopped moving.
Graham rose so fast his chair scraped backward.
The lead investigator’s voice cut through the dining room.
“No one leaves this room.”
Beatrice’s fingers trembled around her wineglass.
Evelyn stepped beside the investigator, still stained, still humiliated, but no longer powerless.
The sealed folder landed on the table.
Unopened.
Evelyn looked from Graham to Beatrice.
“You should have finished dinner before humiliating the witness.”
Graham’s face drained of color.
And the Ashcroft family finally understood the woman on the floor had not been the trap’s victim.
