Chapter 8

Beatrice tried to laugh.
It was a terrible mistake.
The sound came out thin and brittle, nothing like her usual polished cruelty.
“A witness?” she said, looking Evelyn up and down. “This woman?”
Evelyn did not answer.
The lead investigator did.
“Yes.”
One word.
It landed harder than a speech.
Beatrice’s face tightened.
Graham turned toward the investigator.
“My wife has been emotionally unstable for months. Whatever she has told you should be viewed through that lens.”
Evelyn almost admired the speed.
The same weapon, reached for automatically.
Unstable.
Emotional.
Unreliable.
A woman who could not take a joke.
A wife bitter enough to invent crimes because salad dressing stained her gown.
The investigator looked at Graham, then at Evelyn’s dress, then at the overturned bowl on the marble.
“Your statement is noted.”
Graham’s face flickered.
He did not like being documented instead of believed.
Evelyn stepped closer to the table.
“You should have finished dinner before humiliating the witness.”
Beatrice’s nostrils flared.
“You set this up.”
“No,” Evelyn said. “You continued exactly as expected.”
That was what finally frightened the room.
Not the investigators.
Not the folder.
The possibility that tonight’s cruelty had been predicted.
Measured.
Waited for.
Graham looked around at the relatives.
Some avoided his eyes.
Others stared at the folder.
One aunt whispered, “Graham…”
He snapped, “Don’t say anything.”
The lead investigator’s gaze moved to him.
Again.
Documenting.
Evelyn saw Graham realize he had done it again.
Given command.
Created fear.
Shown hierarchy.
The private dining room had become less a family table than an exhibit.
Beatrice leaned back, wineglass still tilted in her hand.
“You think one embarrassing dinner proves anything?”
Evelyn looked at the sealed folder.
“No.”
Her eyes returned to Beatrice.
“That folder is not about the salad.”
Graham’s face drained further.
Beatrice’s fingers tightened so hard the wineglass trembled near spilling.
No one opened the folder.
No numbers were read.
No scheme explained.
But Evelyn’s sentence told them all the same thing.
The humiliation was only the door.

The investigation was already inside the house.
