Chapter 4

Valerie Wolfe had spent nine months preparing to replace Maeve.

Not emotionally.

Operationally.

She removed Maeve from calendar invites first.

Then investor dinners.

Then foundation planning meetings.

Then product-review sessions she claimed had become “too technical.”

Gavin let it happen.

Worse, he thanked Valerie for making things efficient.

Maeve watched the erasure calmly because she had learned that panic gives liars time to call you unstable.

Valerie’s strength was confidence.

She wore black suits like armor and spoke in a tone that made hesitation sound like incompetence. Executives admired her because she never seemed surprised.

That was why Maeve noticed the exact second surprise hit her.

“We never even filed.”

The words moved through the atrium more violently than shouting.

Valerie’s hand slipped from Gavin’s chest.

Her gaze cut toward him.

“Gavin?”

He tried to step toward Maeve, but the crowd had formed a circle without meaning to. Executives who had cheered seconds earlier now looked as if they wanted to disappear into the glass walls.

Maeve saw several of them glance at the diamond ring.

Then at the London envelopes on the desk.

Then back at Gavin.

A public proposal to the CEO was one kind of scandal.

A public proposal to the CEO while the wife had never filed for divorce was something else entirely.

Gavin attempted a smile.

It failed.

“Maeve, we need to talk privately.”

Maeve looked at him.

“Now?”

His eyes pleaded with her.

Not for forgiveness.

For containment.

That hurt more than the kiss.

He did not want to undo the betrayal.

He wanted her to help him manage its optics.

Valerie whispered, “You told me she signed.”

Maeve heard it.

So did three executives standing close enough to stop breathing.

Gavin’s face changed again.

Maeve filed away the sentence.

Signed.

Not loved.

Not understood.

Signed.

That was what he had needed from her.

A signature before the ring.

A disappearance before the announcement.

A wife transformed into paperwork so the celebration could proceed cleanly.

Maeve turned away from him and walked toward the elevator.

The roses remained on the reception desk like evidence of a woman who had still tried to believe him.
