Chapter 5

Cynthia answered before the first ring finished.

That was not coincidence.

She had been waiting.

Maeve stepped into the glass elevator and pressed the button with a steady finger, though her heart was breaking hard enough to make her ribs ache.

Behind her, Gavin pushed through the executives.

“Maeve, stop.”

She lifted the phone.

“Cynthia, activate Clause Seventeen.”

On the other end, Cynthia did not ask if Maeve was certain.

She only said, “Confirmed.”

That single word carried more comfort than any apology Gavin could have offered.

The elevator doors began closing.

Gavin reached them just before the gap narrowed.

“Maeve, don’t do this.”

She looked at him through the glass.

“You did this.”

His hand pressed against the door seam, not strong enough to stop the mechanism.

Valerie stood behind him, rigid, diamond ring still visible in the open box at Gavin’s side. Her face had lost its corporate polish and become something rawer.

Fear.

The executives were silent.

Confetti continued falling because machines do not understand humiliation.

Cynthia’s voice came through the phone, calm and professional.

“Maeve, do not discuss percentages, ownership, accounts, or internal authority in the atrium. Say nothing further. The notice is moving.”

Gavin heard enough to panic.

“Notice?” he said.

Maeve said nothing.

That frightened him more than anger would have.

For years, he relied on her to respond. To explain. To soothe. To soften his damage before it reached the wrong people.

Not now.

The elevator doors nearly closed.

Valerie stepped forward.

“Gavin, what is Clause Seventeen?”

Maeve kept her eyes on her husband.

He did not answer Valerie.

He looked only at Maeve.

That told Valerie more than words could.

The doors closed.

The atrium became a muted scene beyond glass: Gavin turning toward Valerie, Valerie demanding answers, executives pretending not to listen while listening with every part of themselves.

Inside the elevator, Maeve finally let one breath shake.

But she did not cry.

Not yet.

The phone remained at her ear.

Cynthia said, “I’m sorry.”

Maeve looked down at the suitcase handle in her hand.

“So am I.”
