Chapter 1

Woman Returns From Prison And Plays The Recording Her Family Never Expected Her To Keep.
Summer Hayes stood inside the modest Columbus house with rainwater dripping from her hair onto the hardwood floor.
Her black suitcase sat beside her ankle.
Two years in prison had taught her not to flinch easily.
But when Sheila raised the rubbing-alcohol bottle and sprayed her across the face and chest, Summer still closed her eyes.
The cold mist hit her skin.
Her wet gray shirt clung harder to her body.
Sheila smiled with open disgust, one hand resting over her pregnant belly.
“It’s to wash off the smell of prison.”
No one stopped her.
Not Abigail, Summer’s mother, standing near the staircase with one hand over her mouth.
Not Lawrence, Summer’s father, seated in the armchair with detached irritation.
Not Austin, her brother, standing near the cardboard boxes stacked outside what used to be Summer’s room.
Summer slowly opened her eyes.
Droplets ran down her cheeks.
She looked straight at Austin.
The same brother who used to hide behind her when Lawrence shouted.
The same brother who once promised he would take care of her things while she was gone.
“You’re really letting her do this?”
Austin looked away.
That hurt more than the spray.
Abigail stepped forward, nervous but not brave enough to touch her.
“Things changed while you were gone.”
Summer looked past her into the room.
Boxes of diapers.
A baby stroller.
Folded baby clothes.
Her books gone.
Her photos gone.
Her old dresser missing.
Every trace of her life had been cleared out like she had died instead of served time.
Sheila folded one arm smugly across her stomach.
“This house belongs to Austin now.”
Summer became completely still.
The room waited for her to cry.
She did not.
Instead, she reached into her cardigan pocket and pulled out her phone.
Austin’s eyes snapped toward it.
Summer opened a hidden audio file.
His face went pale before she pressed play.
Then a man’s voice began through the speaker.
Austin recognized it immediately.
Summer looked at her family with icy control.
“Then you should hear how he got it.”
Sheila’s smile disappeared.
Austin stopped breathing.

And the house that had erased Summer suddenly became very quiet.
