Chapter 10

Summer did not reveal the full recording.

No ownership documents were shown.

No police entered the house.

No arrests happened.

The final fate of the home remained unknown.

The confrontation ended inside the modest Columbus house with daylight fading across the hardwood floor, a black suitcase standing open in Summer’s old room, cardboard boxes pressed against the walls, and the sharp smell of rubbing alcohol still hanging near the entrance.

Summer stood in the doorway of the room that used to be hers, wet hair drying against her gray cardigan, face pale but steady.

She had returned from prison expecting humiliation.

She had found erasure.

Austin stood in the hall, no longer able to pretend confusion.

His fear had become too visible.

Sheila stood beside him, one hand resting over her pregnant belly, the smugness gone from her face. The rubbing-alcohol bottle lay abandoned on the floor behind her.

Abigail sat on the staircase, crying into one hand.

Lawrence stood near his armchair, silent now, the old irritation replaced by the first signs of dread.

Summer held her phone.

The hidden file remained unopened beyond the fragments they had heard.

Austin’s voice was still inside it.

Waiting.

Don’t tell Mom about the papers.

If she signs before the plea, nobody can unwind it.

Not enough for the whole truth.

Enough to make every person in the hallway afraid of the next sentence.

Summer looked at Austin.

Then Sheila.

Then Abigail and Lawrence.

“You sprayed me like I was the stain,” she said quietly.

No one answered.

She lifted the phone slightly.

“But this house has been dirty since the day you let me take the fall.”

Austin’s mouth opened.

Summer’s thumb hovered over play.

He looked terrified.

Sheila whispered, “Austin…”

Summer’s eyes stayed cold.

“You wanted my room. You wanted my silence. You wanted me to come home ashamed.”

She pressed the screen.

The recording resumed with a burst of static.

Austin lunged half a step, then stopped himself.

Summer did not flinch.

“Now listen,” she said.

The voice on the phone began to speak.

The screen cut to black before the next full sentence could be heard.
