Chapter 25 - The bracelet comes back

Delaney asked Willa whether she wanted the bracelet again.

Not directly.

During their third video call, with therapist guidance.

Willa said:

“No.”

Delaney answered:

“Okay.”

Then later Willa asked me:

“Do we still have it?”

“No. Returned.”

“Did she keep it?”

“I don’t know.”

Two weeks later Delaney mailed a plain envelope to Willa’s therapist.

Inside:

The bracelet.

No note.

Therapist asked Willa whether she wanted it.

“Yes.”

Why now?

“I wanted to choose it.”

There.

Objects change when choice changes.

She wore it once.

Then put it in a drawer.

No symbolic permanent reconciliation.

Then family lunch.

First in-person meeting with Delaney in nine months.

Neutral restaurant.

Thirty minutes planned.

Willa wanted me present.

Delaney arrived early.

She did not hug.

“Hi.”

Willa:

“Hi.”

Then silence.

Delaney said:

“I am sorry I told people your condition was permanent when doctors had told me it might not be.”

Good.

“I am sorry I kept your message from your dad.”

I looked up.

Willa:

“And the panel?”

“Yes. I removed Milo because his story made fundraising harder.”

Specific.

“Why?”

“Because I cared more about keeping the project alive than I did about whether the story was fair to you.”

There.

Willa cried.

Delaney did too.

Then Willa:

“Did you think I was faking?”

“No.”

“Did you think I could get better?”

“I was afraid you might.”

Silence.

That was the hardest.

“Why?”

“Because then I would have to admit what I built around you was wrong.”

Willa wiped her face.

“That’s awful.”

“Yes.”

No defense.

Then Willa said:

“I don’t forgive you yet.”

Delaney nodded.

“Okay.”

Lunch ended at forty-one minutes.

No hug.

Outside Willa said:

“I’m glad I went.”

“Why?”

“She didn’t lie.”

That was enough.

Then the foundation completed construction contract for Northbridge Center.

No gala yet.

Opening in two months.

Arthur asked Willa whether she wanted to attend.

She said:

“Maybe.”

No pressure.

Then the rehab team asked whether Milo could be part of youth advisory committee.

He agreed if paid.

I laughed.

Smart kid.

Foundation set equal youth stipends.
