Chapter 9 - Delaney’s missing emails
We hired independent counsel for the foundation board.
Not my family attorney.
Not Delaney’s.
Parker Wren LLP.
They collected:
Campaign drafts.
Medical committee minutes.
Donor correspondence.
Approval chains.
Fundraising agency messages.
No one was allowed to self-select records.
Then they found an email.
Medical adviser:
Please avoid “permanent paralysis.” Current records do not support permanence. Use “long-term mobility impairment.”
Communications director:
Understood.
Delaney fifteen minutes later:
“Long-term mobility impairment” has no emotional force. Graham has repeatedly described Willa publicly as paralyzed. Use permanent paralysis in donor-facing story, clinical language in technical appendix.
My stomach turned.
Then communications director:
Legal should confirm.
Delaney:
I’ll take responsibility.
She did.
Then another.
External fundraiser:
Wexler family wants confidence the institute addresses conditions not likely to resolve through conventional rehab.
Delaney:
Willa’s case is exactly that.
But by then she had Meridian’s independent review recommending conventional multidisciplinary rehab.
Then:
Do not circulate the insurer report. It is about coverage strategy, not diagnosis.
There.
She had deliberately kept it away from the foundation medical committee.
Central mechanism coming.
But not everything yet.
Then my email.
Delaney sent me final speech:
Three years ago, doctors told us Willa might never walk again…
I changed it myself.
To:
Three years ago, our family entered a world where walking no longer felt possible.
Good.
Then final printed program somehow said:
Permanently paralyzed after a catastrophic accident.
I had not approved that sentence line-by-line.
But I approved the campaign overall after signing the cover sheet.
No escape.
Then Willa’s private message to Delaney.
Two months before gala.
Aunt Delaney, please take my name off the institute.
Reply:
Sweetheart, donors already committed. This is bigger than one event. It will help thousands of children.
Willa:
I don’t want people thinking I’m never getting better.
Delaney:
Getting better is not the same as walking. We have to be realistic.
Then:
Please don’t upset your dad with this right now.
That line broke me.
She had used my grief as censorship.
Then another message from Willa:
Can Dr. Arden come to the gala?
Delaney:
Your dad has made his medical decision. Don’t reopen conflict tonight.
Willa stopped replying.
Then Milo’s youth-panel removal.
Delaney wrote:
Do not put a recovered FND gait patient immediately before Graham’s paralysis appeal. It confuses message discipline.
There.
Message discipline.
That was why Milo disappeared from the program.
Then Dr. Arden contacted the board chair after learning the panel was cut.
She asked to restore it.
Arthur Pell said he would raise it.
Delaney told her:
“It’s too late.”
The day before gala, Arthur told Cecily he planned to discuss it with me that evening.
That was why she told Milo there was still a chance.
He came.
Security did not recognize his outdated badge.
He went around the loading entrance.
