Chapter 1 - The Wife Beneath the Dark Veil

A betrayed wife secretly watches her husband marry her best friend and sends evidence that makes both newlyweds realize their celebration has become a trap.

Claire Mercer sat hidden in the last pew of the private church, wrapped in a black coat and a borrowed dark veil.

Candlelight flickered along the marble pillars.

Cold blue light spilled through stained-glass windows.

Gold rings waited near the altar.

A marriage certificate folder lay open beside the priest’s hand.

At the front of the church, Daniel held Vanessa’s hand.

Claire’s husband held her best friend’s hand.

Her smartphone vibrated beneath the veil.

The screen glowed against her shaking fingers, but the incoming message was unreadable from where she sat.

She lowered the phone just enough to see the altar again.

Vanessa leaned close to Daniel, her ivory bridal suit glowing softly in the candlelight, pearl earrings catching every movement of her smug smile.

“She still thinks you’re working late?”

Daniel did not look toward the back of the church.

He did not search for the wife he had lied to.

He only lifted Vanessa’s hand and slid the gold ring onto her finger with a confident, forceful motion.

“Claire believes whatever keeps the peace.”

The guests smiled.

A few relatives clapped softly before the ceremony was even finished.

Claire’s face twisted beneath the veil.

Her eyes stretched wide with betrayal.

Tears gathered fast, but her body did not collapse.

At the altar, the priest lifted one solemn hand.

“You may kiss the bride.”

Daniel pulled Vanessa against him and kissed her.

The guests erupted into applause.

Claire rose halfway behind the marble pillar, lifted her phone, and took one sharp photograph.

The kiss.

The rings.

The certificate folder beneath Daniel’s arm.

Then she sent it to an unreadable contact.

Her tears kept falling, but her expression changed.

The grief went cold.

She lifted the phone to her ear.

“Begin everything at eight sharp.”

Daniel’s phone vibrated during the applause.

He pulled it out.

Saw the image.

His face drained white.

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

Claire stepped from behind the pillar just enough for candlelight to touch half her tear-streaked face.

“Enjoy your night, honey.”

Daniel froze beside his new bride.
