Chapter 9 - Enjoy Your Night, Honey

Claire had imagined screaming.

She had imagined storming down the aisle, tearing Vanessa’s veil away, throwing the certificate folder into candle flames, demanding Daniel say her name in front of everyone.

But when the moment came, screaming felt too small.

Daniel had expected tears.

Maybe rage.

Maybe collapse.

Something he could call unstable.

Something Vanessa could pity.

Something guests could dismiss after dessert.

Instead, Claire gave him calm.

That was the one version of her he had never prepared for.

She stood beneath the dark veil, black coat framing her body, gold necklace glinting faintly at her throat.

Daniel remained near the altar, phone in hand.

Vanessa stood beside him, ivory suit suddenly too bright, pearl earrings trembling with every breath.

The guests looked from one woman to the other.

The wife in black.

The bride in ivory.

The husband between them, losing both stories at once.

Claire looked directly at Daniel.

“Enjoy your night, honey.”

The words were almost tender.

That made them crueler.

Daniel’s mouth opened.

No sound came.

Vanessa whispered, “What does that mean?”

Claire looked at her.

“It means you should ask him before eight.”

Vanessa turned slowly toward Daniel.

He did not meet her eyes.

That was answer enough to start the panic.

The church remained warm with candlelight and cold with blue window shadows.

The marriage certificate folder stayed closed.

The rings remained visible.

The smartphone stayed in Daniel’s trembling hand.

Claire slipped her camera back into her coat.

She did not walk closer.

She did not need to.

The trap was no longer in the aisle.

It was already moving toward morning.

Daniel took one step after her.

“Claire.”

She raised her hand without turning fully.

He stopped again.

His own guests saw it.

Vanessa saw it.

Claire looked over her shoulder, half her face in candlelight.

“You taught me peace, Daniel.”

His brow furrowed.

She smiled through tears.

May you like

“Tonight I finally used it.”

Read Chapter 10 👉 Because Claire’s calm frightened Daniel more than confrontation, and Vanessa realized the celebration might only be the first scene of the trap.
