Chapter 4 - The Marriage Certificate Folder

The marriage certificate folder lay open near the altar, perfectly placed beneath candlelight.

Daniel looked at it as if it had betrayed him.

Minutes earlier, it had been the symbol of control.

He had planned everything with polished care.

Private church.

Limited guest list.

No public announcement until later.

No trace Claire could challenge before the paperwork became complicated.

Vanessa had loved the secrecy because it made the betrayal feel exclusive.

A hidden ceremony for a woman who believed she had won.

Now the folder sat exposed in the same photograph Claire had sent.

Daniel reached toward it instinctively.

Claire’s voice stopped him from the back of the church.

“Don’t touch it.”

The priest froze.

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

Daniel turned.

“You don’t give orders here.”

Claire stepped forward another pace.

The veil shifted, revealing more of her tear-streaked face.

“No. I give evidence.”

The room went silent.

One guest stood, then sat again when Daniel shot him a look.

Claire saw the gesture.

Still trying to command the room.

Still believing fear could restore order.

Vanessa grabbed the certificate folder and closed it too quickly.

The sound snapped through the church.

Claire’s gaze moved to her.

“Careful, Vanessa.”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“You followed us.”

Claire’s lips trembled once.

Then steadied.

“You invited me every time you smiled in my kitchen.”

The sentence hit harder than shouting.

Several guests exchanged stunned looks.

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

A flash of irritation crossed his face.

Not guilt.

Irritation that Vanessa had created another thread he could not manage.

Claire noticed that too.

The best friend.

The secret bride.

Still disposable when Daniel needed a scapegoat.

Vanessa noticed it a second later and went pale.

The priest looked between them.

“I think we should pause.”

Daniel snapped, “No.”

The word was too loud.

Too desperate.

The church heard panic beneath it.

Claire lifted her phone slightly.

“You should have paused before the ring.”

Daniel stared at the screen in her hand.

He no longer knew what had been sent, where it had gone, or who would wake up to it at eight sharp.
