PART 5

The board arrived angry.

That changed when they saw the sealed coffee mug, the detained server, the terrified boy, and Victor standing too still near the window.

William did not raise his voice.

He never needed to when he had facts.

He placed Mara’s folder on the conference table.

“Six months ago, Mara Cole warned this office about unauthorized vendor activity.”

“She died before the meeting.”

“Her evidence disappeared from our internal review.”

He turned to Ethan.

“Her son preserved a copy.”

Ethan stood beside Clara now, holding the straps of his backpack with both hands.

Clara had given him water.

He had not touched it.

Trust came slowly to children who had learned adults could vanish.

Victor’s attorney had not arrived yet, but Victor began speaking anyway.

“That folder is unverified.”

William nodded.

“Then you will welcome an independent review.”

Victor said nothing.

The head of legal opened the first pages.

Her expression changed almost immediately.

“These authorizations used executive credentials.”

William asked, “Whose?”

She looked up.

“Victor’s.”

The board members shifted.

Victor snapped, “Operational credentials are used by teams every day.”

The security officer received a message.

“Sir.”

“The vendor payment account links to a private holding company.”

William did not blink.

“Owner?”

The officer looked at Victor.

Victor’s face went pale.

The answer no longer needed speaking.

Ethan suddenly moved toward the table.

He pulled a small flash drive from his pocket.

“My mom said the printed pages were not enough.”

Everyone looked at him.

His voice shook, but he kept going.

“She said if someone called her crazy, the audio would matter.”

William took the flash drive carefully.

“May I?”

Ethan nodded.

Legal connected it to a secure laptop.

Mara’s voice filled the room.

Calm.

Tired.

Determined.

Victor, I know about the succession insurance.

I know about the vendor accounts.

If anything happens to me, there are copies.

Then Victor’s voice.

You should have stayed in compliance and stopped pretending you could reach William.

Ethan covered his ears.

Clara crouched beside him.

William did not move.

His oldest friend’s voice continued.

Accidents happen when people dig in places they cannot survive.

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

Victor looked at William.

“This is not what it sounds like.”

William’s voice was quiet.

“It sounds like my employee begged for the truth and you threatened her.”

He turned to security.

May you like

“Remove him.”
