PART 7

By evening, Ethan had not left the building.

William refused to let him disappear into another system hallway with a plastic bag of belongings and a promise someone would call.

Child services arrived.

So did Ethan’s aunt by video call from a hospital room in Spokane.

Her name was Rachel Cole.

She cried the moment she saw him.

“Ethan, baby, I’m sorry.”

Ethan pressed his lips together.

He did not cry.

That worried William more than tears would have.

Rachel explained everything.

After Mara’s death, she had tried to take Ethan in.

Then cancer treatment worsened.

Then bills piled up.

Then strange men came asking whether Mara had left documents.

Rachel told Ethan to hide the folder.

Ethan did.

For six months, he carried the truth in a backpack older than most people’s shoes in the executive lobby.

William listened without interrupting.

Then he asked legal what could be done.

Grace Ellison, Harrison Global’s outside counsel, answered carefully.

“Temporary protective placement must go through proper channels.”

William said, “Start.”

Grace looked at him.

“With whom?”

William did not look away from Ethan.

“With someone safe.”

Ethan finally spoke.

“You don’t have to fix me.”

The room went still.

William’s expression changed.

“No child should think protection is repair.”

Ethan looked confused.

William leaned forward.

“You are not broken because adults failed.”

Ethan’s eyes filled then.

Only a little.

He blinked fast.

Clara turned away politely.

The next morning, news broke.

Not the full story.

Enough.

Harrison Global CEO survives suspected poisoning attempt.

Internal executive detained.

Child witness credited in lockdown.

Reporters surrounded the tower.

William ignored them.

He spent the morning with federal investigators and the afternoon in a small conference room with Ethan, Rachel on video, Grace, and a child advocate.

A temporary plan formed.

Secure lodging.

Medical exam.

Trauma counselor.

A protected communication channel with Rachel.

And a review into Mara Cole’s death.

When Ethan heard that last part, he looked up.

“You believe she didn’t just crash?”

William answered honestly.

“I believe your mother found something powerful men wanted buried.”

Ethan gripped the backpack.

“Will they bury it again?”

William looked toward the locked boardroom where Victor’s name had already been removed from the door.

“No.”

“Not while I can still stand in front of it.”
