Chapter 4 - The Officials at the Door

The front door opened without a dramatic slam.

That made it more frightening.

A soft hinge.

A controlled step.

Then another.

The dining room turned toward the French doors as a woman in a navy business suit entered carrying a thick sealed folder and a tablet.

Straight dark brown hair.

Striped blouse.

Calm face.

Behind her came three serious men in formal suits.

No one introduced them.

No titles were given.

No badges were shown.

No purpose was explained.

Their presence alone changed the temperature of the room.

Ethan turned only slightly, as if he had expected the arrival down to the minute.

Robert’s pointing hand dropped.

Linda clutched her necklace.

Madison’s mouth fell open.

The relatives recoiled from the dining table, chairs scraping against the floor, faces stretched wide with shock.

The woman in navy looked first at Ethan.

Then at the medal in his hand.

Then at the financial folder open before Robert.

Her expression did not change.

That was what frightened Robert most.

People who came to negotiate smiled.

People who came to apologize softened their eyes.

This woman did neither.

She looked like someone arriving at the correct address.

Robert straightened.

“Who are you?”

The woman did not answer.

The prompt forbade revealing her position or purpose, and even inside the story, she seemed to understand that silence could be more powerful than any title.

She held the sealed folder closer to her chest.

Ethan’s phone vibrated once more.

He glanced down.

Then back up.

Linda’s voice trembled.

“Ethan, what is going on?”

He looked at her.

For a moment, the anger left his face.

Only exhaustion remained.

“You invited everyone to watch him take it from me.”

Linda’s eyes widened.

“That is not fair.”

“No,” Ethan said. “It wasn’t.”

Madison stood abruptly.

Her chair scraped backward.

“This is insane. It’s just coaching money.”

Ethan turned toward her.

“You knew it was mine.”

Her face flushed.

“I knew Dad said—”

She stopped.

The woman in navy looked at Madison then.

Only a look.

Madison sat back down.

Robert noticed the effect and turned redder.

“This is my home.”

The woman in navy still did not answer.

One of the men behind her looked at the sealed folder.

Another looked at the family education-account folder on the table.

The third observed the medal.

No one moved closer yet.

No one explained.

Ethan slowly placed the medal against his chest.

His hand shook now, but his voice stayed controlled.

“I spent years thinking silence would keep the peace.”

Robert’s jaw tightened.

“And now?”

Ethan looked at the sealed folder in the official’s arms.

May you like

“Now peace can explain itself.”
