Chapter 9 - The Folder Begins to Open

The sealed folder did not open fully.

Not yet.

The woman in navy slid one finger beneath the flap and paused.

The entire dining room watched.

Robert’s eyes stretched wide.

Linda’s lips trembled.

Madison clutched the cheerleading brochure like it could still protect her version of the night.

The relatives sat frozen, suddenly aware that their nods and smirks might have placed them on the wrong side of a story larger than family favoritism.

Ethan stood facing all of them.

The medal pressed against his chest.

The phone in his other hand.

The confidential notification still unreadable.

He had imagined this moment many times and never once accurately.

In his mind, he was always stronger.

Less hurt.

More triumphant.

In reality, his throat ached.

His hands shook.

And beneath the calm he had forced onto his face, a nineteen-year-old boy still grieved the dinner that could have been.

They could have eaten together.

They could have asked about his project.

They could have celebrated Madison without stealing from him.

They could have been proud of both children.

Instead, Robert had slammed a folder beside his medal and announced his future belonged to someone else.

The woman in navy looked at Ethan.

A silent question.

Ethan did not speak.

He only nodded once.

Robert saw it and exploded.

“No. Absolutely not. Whatever this is, I do not consent.”

The woman’s expression remained unchanged.

Consent.

Another interesting word.

Ethan did not reveal why it did or did not matter.

He simply looked at his father.

“You never asked for mine.”

The sentence landed gently.

It wounded more because of that.

Linda covered her mouth.

Madison’s eyes filled, but it was unclear whether from guilt, fear, or the collapse of expectation.

Robert leaned forward, voice low now, dangerous.

“You will regret humiliating me.”

Ethan’s eyes held steady.

“I already regret waiting this long.”

The sealed folder opened another inch.

Still no contents visible.

No fellowship details.

No patent value.

No legal structure.

No official purpose.

Only the edge of documents inside, thick and organized.

The three men in suits watched the table.

The woman in navy looked from Ethan to the folder, then to Robert.

Robert’s face drained completely.

For once, he seemed to understand that volume would not close what had been opened.

Ethan’s phone vibrated again.

He did not look down.

He kept his eyes on his father.

The room held its breath.
