Chapter 6 - Madison’s Smile Disappears

Madison had never expected Ethan to fight back.

Not really.

He might argue.

He might leave the table.

He might send a long email later that everyone would ignore.

But stand there, calm and unblinking, with strangers at the door and a confidential message on his phone?

No.

That was not the Ethan she knew.

The Ethan she knew stayed up late in the garage and came to breakfast quiet.

The Ethan she knew walked to award ceremonies alone because Robert said parking downtown was a nightmare.

The Ethan she knew mailed applications without telling anyone because Linda said rejection would only depress him.

The Ethan she knew had become useful by needing little.

Now he needed something.

And Madison hated the way everyone suddenly took him seriously.

She gripped her cheerleading brochure until the corner bent.

“It’s not like I asked to be part of this,” she snapped.

Ethan looked at her.

“You put the brochure on the table.”

“That doesn’t mean—”

“You smiled when Dad said my fund would pay for it.”

Her face flushed.

“You always act like you’re better than me because you’re smart.”

“No. You act like I owe you because they taught you wanting things mattered more when you wanted them.”

The words hit.

Madison looked toward Linda, waiting for rescue.

Linda’s face was too pale to offer it.

Robert slammed the table again, but this time the sound lacked its earlier command.

“Enough.”

No one flinched the way they had before.

That frightened him.

Ethan noticed.

So did the woman in navy.

She stepped one pace into the room.

The three men behind her followed by half a step.

Robert’s eyes widened.

The sealed folder remained closed.

No contents revealed.

No purpose announced.

But the movement made everyone understand that the visitors were not decorative.

Madison looked at them, then at Ethan’s phone.

“What did they send you?”

Ethan did not answer.

His thumb rested over the screen, hiding the unreadable notification.

Madison’s anger shifted into fear.

“Ethan?”

He looked at her for a long moment.

“You laughed at the medal.”

Her mouth trembled.

“I was joking.”

“No,” he said. “You were safe.”

She did not understand.

Not fully.

He explained only enough to hurt.

“You were safe to be cruel because they always made sure I paid the cost.”

Robert stepped toward him.

“Don’t talk to your sister like that.”

Ethan turned.

“Don’t spend my future like hers deserves two.”

The silence after that was massive.

Madison’s smirk was completely gone.
