Chapter 1 - The Purple Crayon

A feared Manhattan mafia boss enters a restaurant sealed for his private meeting and finds his former wife protecting a little girl with the unmistakable eyes of his family just before an unidentified person approaches them from behind.

The heavy glass doors of the sealed Manhattan restaurant opened like a judgment.

Dominic Valenti walked in first.

Black suit.

Open black shirt.

Luxury watch flashing beneath chandelier light.

Behind him came Marco Benedetti, broad-shouldered and silent, eyes already scanning the rain-soaked windows, velvet chairs, white tablecloths, and dark reflective marble floor.

The restaurant was supposed to be empty.

That was what sealed meant.

No guests.

No noise.

No accidents.

Only silent staff along the walls and one private table prepared for men who did not repeat instructions.

But the maître d’ came rushing toward Dominic with his face twisted in terror.

“Sir… table nine was never cleared.”

Dominic stopped.

Marco’s posture changed instantly.

Every waiter lowered his eyes.

Before Dominic could ask what that meant, something rolled across the marble floor.

A purple crayon.

It spun once, bounced lightly over a seam in the floor, and struck Dominic’s polished shoe.

The tiny sound was absurdly loud.

Dominic looked down.

His face did not move at first.

Then his hand lowered slowly.

He picked up the crayon between two fingers as if it were evidence from a grave.

A child’s crayon.

Inside his sealed restaurant.

During his private meeting.

His gaze lifted.

Across the room, near the rain-covered windows, Elena sat at table nine.

Champagne satin wrap dress.

Dark brown waves falling over one shoulder.

A wineglass untouched beside her hand.

And beside her sat a little girl in a cream lace dress, drawing across the white tablecloth with the careless innocence of a child who did not understand where she was.

The girl turned.

Dominic’s body locked.

Large black eyes.

Tiny gold flecks.

Valenti eyes.

The child looked from Dominic to Elena, then back at Dominic.

“Mommy… why does he have my eyes?”

The room went dead.

Dominic moved before Marco could stop him.

He charged toward table nine and planted one hand hard against the table edge, purple crayon clenched in the other.

“Who is she?”

Elena recoiled for half a breath.

Then she pulled the child against her side and stared at him with five years of buried rage.

“She is mine.”

Dominic’s fingers crushed around the crayon.

“You let me believe there was no child.”

Then footsteps sounded behind him.

Slow.

Heavy.

Elena looked past his shoulder.

“Before you accuse me again… turn around.”

Dominic turned halfway.

A long shadow crossed the marked tablecloth.

And for the first time in years, fear entered Marco Benedetti’s face.
