Chapter 6 - Marco Sees the Shadow

Marco Benedetti had survived twenty years beside Dominic Valenti because he noticed what other men dismissed.

A nervous waiter’s left hand.

A locked door that closed too softly.

A glass poured but not drunk.

A woman’s eyes moving toward an entrance before sound reached the room.

Now he noticed Elena looking past Dominic.

Not over him casually.

Past him with the cold certainty of someone expecting a ghost to arrive on schedule.

Marco’s body went rigid.

His hand did not move toward a weapon.

The night forbade that kind of chaos.

But every muscle in him prepared for impact.

Dominic saw Marco’s face change.

Then he heard it too.

A step.

Another.

Slow.

Heavy.

Polished shoes on marble.

The little girl stopped drawing.

The purple crayon hovered above the white cloth.

Dominic did not turn yet.

He watched Elena.

Her face was fierce, protective, and strangely calm.

“You knew someone was coming,” he said.

Elena answered with silence.

That silence was almost worse than yes.

The child whispered, “Mommy?”

Elena pulled her closer.

“Stay behind me.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“You brought her here for this?”

Elena’s eyes flashed.

“I told you, I brought no one to you.”

“Then why are you inside my sealed restaurant?”

Her face hardened.

Again, no answer.

The footsteps came closer.

Marco moved one step to Dominic’s side, eyes tracking the long shadow stretching across the marble floor.

The unidentified figure remained out of view.

Only polished shoes.

Lower coat.

Blurred shoulder in chandelier light.

A shadow reaching across the table.

It slid over the child’s drawings.

Over the purple star.

Over the black-and-gold eyes.

The little girl looked at the shadow with innocent curiosity.

Dominic moved instantly, positioning himself partly between the shadow and the child before he seemed to realize what he had done.

Elena saw the movement.

Her expression changed.

Not trust.

Not forgiveness.

But something like pain.

“You don’t get to act protective after the question.”

Dominic looked at her.

“What question?”

She repeated softly, almost cruelly, “Who is she?”

His face tightened.

The question had been fury.

Shock.

Disbelief.

But in Elena’s ears, it had sounded like threat.

He understood that too late.

The footsteps stopped behind him.

Close enough that the shadow touched his hand on the table.

Marco’s eyes bulged.

He knew something Dominic had not yet seen.
