Chapter 4 - Elena’s Arm Across the Child

Elena did not raise her voice.
She did not need to.
Her entire body spoke for her.
One arm locked around the little girl.
One hand spread over the marked tablecloth.
Shoulders angled between Dominic and the child.
Chin lifted.
Eyes cold.
Dominic had known her in silk, in fury, in silence, in rooms where everyone else became irrelevant the moment she entered.
But he had never seen this version of her.
Mother.
Not in the soft greeting-card way.
Not gentle only.
A shield.
A door.
A wall built from bone and memory.
He hated that he had not seen it grow.
He hated that the child leaned into Elena as if this protection was familiar.
He hated that he wanted to ask everything at once and knew she would answer nothing while he stood over them like a storm.
So he forced himself to step back.
Only half a step.
But enough.
Elena noticed.
Her eyes narrowed as if she mistrusted restraint more than anger.
The little girl relaxed slightly and resumed holding the purple crayon, though she did not draw.
Dominic looked at the wineglass.
“You were waiting.”
Elena’s face did not change.
“For dinner?”
“This restaurant was sealed.”
“Not well enough.”
Marco’s eyes flicked to the staff.
The maître d’ looked ready to faint.
Dominic did not look away from Elena.
“How did you get inside?”
She gave a small, humorless smile.
“You think every locked door in Manhattan belongs to you?”
“No.”
“But enough of them?”
His silence answered.
Her smile vanished.
“You always believed doors were the truth. Who could enter. Who could leave. Who could be kept out.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“And you believed disappearing solved everything.”
The child looked up.
“Mommy, are we in trouble?”
Elena’s entire face softened.
“No.”
Dominic watched the lie and knew it was mercy.
The child was not in trouble.
But everyone around her was standing inside something dangerous.
A waiter shifted near the wall.
Marco turned sharply.
The waiter froze.
Dominic lifted one hand without looking.
Marco stopped.
The restaurant held its breath again.
Elena looked at Marco’s obedience and then back at Dominic.
“This is why I kept her behind me.”
The words struck the air.
Kept her.
Not brought her.
Not hid her.
Kept her.
Dominic bent slightly over the table, but did not invade the child’s space this time.
“You keep speaking like I was the danger.”
Elena’s eyes became brutal.
May you like
“You were never the only danger.”
