Chapter 24 - Genevieve’s room

Mercer House remained closed for extensive remediation.

Part of the west wing was ultimately demolished.

Not because the entire mansion was radioactive.

Because removing contaminated material and old structural pathways required major work.

I went back once before demolition.

Protective equipment.

Environmental team.

No children.

Genevieve’s room had already been cleared of ordinary belongings.

The walls remained.

Window.

Fireplace.

The chair where she told me the house was making her sick.

I stood there.

Then sat on the floor.

Daniel waited outside.

I said:

“She told me.”

He answered:

“I know.”

“I didn’t listen.”

He did not rescue me.

Good.

I stayed ten minutes.

Then left.

The mansion was later remediated, tested, and certified for safe occupancy under regulatory oversight.

I still sold it.

Why keep it?

History?

Prestige?

I had enough history.

The buyer converted it into a private educational foundation property after additional redevelopment.

People expected me to burn it down emotionally.

Buildings are not guilty.

We had used one badly.

The land required repair.

Then it could become something else.

I liked that better.
