Chapter 25 - Elena stops wearing the uniform

The pink-and-white maid uniform remained in a plastic bag for months.

Elena had borrowed it from the staffing agency.

Technically it needed to be returned.

She missed the deadline.

The agency charged her seventy-two dollars.

When she told me, I said:

“I’ll pay it.”

She gave me a look.

“Right.”

“I am capable of learning slowly.”

“You are.”

She paid it herself after getting regular work.

Months later, the agency refunded the uniform charge because the garment had actually been classified as issued consumable apparel after a policy change.

Seventy-two dollars.

Elena mailed me a photograph of the refund notice.

JUSTICE

I laughed for five minutes.

That became the better memory of the uniform.

Not the mysterious penniless woman entering a billionaire’s mansion.

A ridiculous payroll refund.

Elena eventually completed additional certification in patient advocacy and care coordination.

She was good at it.

Not because Genevieve had chosen her.

Because she listened to people who were easy for institutions to summarize.

Old patients.

Poor patients.

Confused families.

People with bad records.

People who sounded angry because no one had answered the first six times.

I donated to her nonprofit once.

Publicly.

At market rate with no employment conditions.

She called.

“Thank you.”

May you like

No fight.

Progress on both sides.
