Chapter 12 - THE FIRST FAMILYFamily Stability Network began thirty-four years earlier under another name:

The Sloan Domestic Continuity Project.

Judge Robert Sloan was not a judge then. He was a family-law researcher studying how courts responded to conflicting parental testimony.

He recruited couples in crisis, placed observers inside their homes, and created controlled emergencies to test which parent appeared more credible.

The project ended publicly after a child was injured.

Privately, Sloan continued it through medical clinics, shelters, and custody courts.

The first family lived in the same Detroit apartment building as Lily.

Apartment 4B.

The decaying building had once been a university-owned research residence.

Sloan selected it because hidden observation corridors already connected the units.

Marcus later purchased the property through Family Stability.

Sophie unknowingly brought Lily and Leo into the exact apartment where the system began.

Or perhaps not unknowingly.

She admitted Laura told her 4B contained the original archive.

Sophie believed recovering it could dismantle Sloan’s power.

“You knew that building was dangerous before moving in?” Hannah asked.

“Yes.”

“Did Lily know?”

“No.”

“Did Leo?”

“No.”

Sophie looked toward her children through the hospital window.

“I kept telling myself staying near the truth was safer than running blind.”

“Was it?”

“No.”

The original family consisted of Robert Sloan, his wife Margaret, and their two children.

One child was Grant.

The second was a daughter named Rachel.

Officer Rachel Brooks stared at the recovered birth record.

“That’s impossible.”

Her parents had told her she was born in Ohio and adopted as an infant.

The document said Rachel Sloan was born in Detroit eight months earlier than her legal birthday.

She was Judge Sloan’s biological daughter.

Grant Sloan was her brother.

David Brooks had known.

That was why Sloan recruited him.

Marriage placed one of Sloan’s operatives beside the daughter removed from the family experiment decades earlier.

Rachel struggled to speak.

“Why was I removed?”

The archive explained.

Margaret Sloan attempted to expose her husband after the first child injury. She fled with Rachel and entered a protected identity.

Robert reported both dead.

Margaret later became Margaret Vale, Marcus’s mother.

Marcus and Rachel were maternal half-siblings.

The network was not only professional.

It was built around a family that kept changing names and placing members near future targets.

Rachel had responded to Lily’s call because Sophie knew the truth about her birth.

The old cellphone contained Rachel’s childhood case number.

Sophie hoped the number would force Sloan’s system to route the emergency toward her.

Rachel looked at Sophie.

“You used my hidden identity.”

“I needed an officer Sloan couldn’t fully control.”

“You did not know whether I was controlled.”

“No.”

“You placed that uncertainty beside your children.”

“Yes.”

Again, there was no clean hero.

Hannah traced the “first family” reference to Apartment 4B’s original observation level.

Police reopened the building walls.

Behind Lily’s bedroom closet, they found a narrow corridor.

At the end stood a sealed room filled with thirty-four years of tapes.

One monitor remained active.

Judge Sloan appeared live.

He stood inside a warehouse with Emily Sloan, Milo, and several missing women.

Grant held a gun.

Marcus, wounded but conscious, sat restrained nearby.

Sloan looked toward the camera.

“Rachel, come home.”

She stared at the father she never knew.

“You built this around your own children.”

“I built it because your mother stole you.”

“She saved me.”

“She erased your family.”

“You erased women for decades.”

Sloan’s face remained calm.

“Bring Ava, and I release every mother.”

Rachel’s hand tightened around the radio.

“No.”

Grant moved behind Emily.

Sloan continued.

“Then tell Lily why her mother knew you were my daughter before you did.”

The camera shifted.

Sophie’s photograph hung on the warehouse wall beside Margaret Vale.

Beneath it was a label:

SOPHIE SLOAN—SECOND DAUGHTER.

Rachel turned toward Sophie.

Sophie went pale.

“That is not my name.”

May you like

But her medical records had just begun changing across every connected hospital system.

👉 Sloan claimed Sophie and Rachel were sisters, making Lily and Leo part of the founding family’s next generation.
