Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE DOORRachel opened the door with her weapon lowered.

A woman sat on the floor with one wrist chained to a radiator.
She was not Sophie.
She identified herself as Rebecca Shaw.
The missing mother had been alive for eighteen months.
Her hair had been cut short. Bruises marked her arms, and she struggled to focus beneath the harsh clinic lights.
“They said my son forgot me,” she whispered.
Hannah called paramedics.
“Who kept you here?”
“Dr. Ward.”
“Marcus?”
“He brought women.”
“Where is Sophie?”
Rebecca stared toward the rear exit.
“She fought them.”
Sophie had arrived in the clinic less than three hours earlier. Marcus and Ward attempted to record her signing the abandonment letter.
Sophie refused.
She broke a lamp, cut Marcus’s face, and reached Rebecca’s room before a third person pulled her away.
“Who?”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“A police officer.”
Rachel stiffened.
“Uniformed?”
“Yes.”
“Name?”
“I couldn’t see.”
The clinic’s security system had been wiped, but one hallway camera stored footage locally.
Sophie appeared between Marcus and Ward, struggling violently.
A uniformed officer entered.
His face remained outside the frame.
He struck Sophie with a stun device and helped place her inside a wheelchair.
The officer’s radio number was visible.
Rachel recognized it.
The unit belonged to Sergeant David Brooks.
Her former husband.
David supervised domestic-response officers in the same district.
He had encouraged Rachel to answer Lily’s call personally after dispatch mentioned children inside a locked apartment.
Rachel thought he trusted her judgment.
Now she wondered whether he had sent her because he wanted someone inside the investigation he could predict.
Hannah contacted internal affairs.
David’s patrol vehicle had been off duty during Sophie’s disappearance.
Its GPS had been manually disabled.
He failed to answer his phone.
Rachel stared at the frozen image.
“Why would he help Marcus?”
Rebecca knew.
Family Stability Network recruited law-enforcement officers to provide private “safety extractions” during custody disputes.
David received monthly payments through a consulting company.
He also accessed police records to warn Marcus when women filed complaints.
“Did he know you?” Hannah asked Rachel.
David had met Sophie twice during domestic calls. Both times, he told Rachel the woman seemed unstable and Marcus appeared calm.
Rachel had accepted his assessment.
Not entirely.
But enough to move on.
The realization cut deeply.
She had trusted professional certainty built by a man helping manufacture the scene.
Rebecca was taken to the hospital under protection.
She asked for her son, Milo.
Records showed Marcus had become Milo’s legal guardian after Rebecca disappeared.
The child now lived with Dr. Ward.
The psychiatrist who confined Rebecca had been raising her son.
Police reached Ward’s suburban home.
The house was empty.
Milo’s bedroom had been stripped.
A wall map contained marked routes toward Canada.
Ward and Marcus may have planned to move several children across the border under educational-travel authorizations.
Rachel returned to Lily.
She did not tell the child every detail, only that they had found another mother who had been hidden.
“Did she get her kid back?” Lily asked.
“Not yet.”
“Why not?”
“Because adults created papers saying he belonged somewhere else.”
Lily looked toward Leo’s bed.
“Papers are mean.”
“People can use them that way.”
“Can people make better ones?”
Rachel almost smiled.
“Yes.”
Hannah entered with another update.
Police located the pickup truck in a parking structure beneath a downtown courthouse.
Blood marked the rear seat.
Sophie’s bracelet lay near the door.
The courthouse camera showed David Brooks moving an unconscious woman through a private judicial entrance.
Judge Robert Sloan had been inside the building at 3:11 a.m.
The same judge who gave Marcus emergency custody.
A secured elevator descended beneath the courthouse.

According to official plans, no basement level existed.
👉 Sophie had been taken through a judge’s private entrance into a hidden section beneath the courthouse.
