Chapter 10 - The Question Alexander Could Not Let Go

No final answer was revealed.

Emma did not explain why Noah trusted her.

Alexander did not ask what came afterward.

No decision was made about whether Emma would stay.

The future of the maid, the boy, and the grieving father remained unresolved inside the warm mansion living room.

Only the moment remained.

Noah sat on the expensive rug beside the rebuilt tower of wooden blocks, one small hand clutching Humphrey, the worn gray stuffed elephant pressed to his chest. His soft brown hair fell over his forehead, and his face still carried the fragile brightness of a child who had spoken after being lost in silence too long.

Emma knelt beside him in her pale blue maid uniform, white apron wrinkled, pendant necklace catching the morning light. Her blonde ponytail had loosened slightly, and tears still shone on her cheeks. She looked overwhelmed, frightened, and deeply careful, as if one wrong movement might shatter the trust now wrapped around her fingers.

Alexander stood slowly from the rug.

His black briefcase remained fallen behind him on the marble floor, forgotten.

He looked from the blocks to Humphrey.

From Humphrey to Noah’s hand gripping Emma’s.

From Emma’s tearful face to the doorway where silent staff pretended not to listen.

Everything in him collided.

Grief.

Hope.

Suspicion.

The agony of hearing his son speak to someone else.

The miracle of hearing his son speak at all.

Noah looked up at him.

His voice did not return again.

But his earlier sentence still haunted the room.

Daddy… please don’t make her leave.

Alexander took one careful step closer.

Emma slowly rose while holding Noah’s hand, terrified she had crossed an invisible boundary she could never uncross.

Noah immediately tightened his grip.

Alexander saw it.

His eyes filled again.

His voice came out low, raw, and almost frightened.

“Who are you… and what did you do to my son?”

Emma’s lips parted.

No answer came.

Noah pressed Humphrey between himself and her uniform, clinging fiercely.

The warm daylight poured through the gold curtains.

The chandelier glowed softly above them.

The wooden tower stood between father and son like a fragile bridge.

Alexander stared at Emma, no longer cold, no longer fully controlled, and not yet trusting.

May you like

Emma stared back, stunned and tearful.

And in the mansion where silence had ruled for months, the unanswered question became louder than any scream.
