Chapter 9 - The Tower on the Rug

The tower rose slowly.
Red block.
Yellow block.
Blue block.
Noah placed each one with intense concentration while Emma held her hands nearby but did not interfere.
Alexander watched the pattern.
She did not correct him when the tower leaned.
She did not praise too loudly.
She did not gasp when he made a sound under his breath.
She simply stayed.
That was the word forming in Alexander’s mind.
Stay.
Dangerous word.
Unfair word.
He had no right to attach it to her after ten minutes.
He had no right to ask anything of the substitute maid kneeling on his rug, face still tearful, uniform wrinkled where Noah had clung to it.
The prompt forbids revealing what he asks her afterward.
So he did not ask it yet.
He only watched.
Noah lifted Humphrey and set the elephant beside the tower like a guard.
Then he looked toward Alexander.
Not speaking.
But looking.
Alexander felt the invitation and nearly failed to recognize it.
Emma noticed too.
She did not say, “Ask your father.”
She did not turn the moment into pressure.
She only shifted slightly to make space near the rug.
Alexander lowered himself slowly to the floor.
His suit pulled at the knees.
He did not care.
Noah watched him approach.
Emma’s hand hovered near the child, ready to support but not trap.
Alexander picked up a green block.
He held it out.
Noah stared at it.
Then at his father.
Then, after a long breath, he took it.
Their fingers brushed.
Alexander’s face crumpled.
He looked away quickly, but not before Emma saw tears fill his eyes.
The house stayed silent.
Even Mrs. Bell did not interrupt.
Noah placed the green block near the top.
The tower wobbled.
All three froze.
Then it held.
Noah smiled again.
This time, the smile reached Alexander.
Not fully.
Not the way it reached Emma.
But enough.
Alexander let out a sound that was almost a laugh and almost a sob.
Noah looked startled, then pleased.
Emma’s own tears slipped again.
She wiped them quickly.
Alexander saw.
His suspicion did not vanish.
It could not.
A father does not stop questioning the moment a stranger becomes important to his child.
But the suspicion now stood beside gratitude, grief, fear, and something he did not know how to name.
Noah leaned against Emma’s side again.
Alexander’s heart tightened.
The boundary remained.
The question remained.
Who are you?
And beneath it, another question he was more afraid to ask.
May you like
Why you?
