Chapter 7 - The House Begins to Listen

The mansion had ears.

Not hidden ones.

Human ones.

By the time Alexander rose from one knee, two staff members had appeared discreetly near the hallway.

Mrs. Bell stood rigid near the entrance, face pale with professional alarm.

A younger maid hovered behind her, eyes wide.

No one spoke.

Everyone had heard the briefcase fall.

Some had heard Noah’s voice.

All of them could feel the house changing.

Alexander turned his head slightly.

The staff vanished one step back, not fully gone.

Emma’s anxiety sharpened.

She knew houses like this protected themselves by removing whatever disturbed the surface.

A maid who made the silent child speak might be treasured.

Or blamed.

Sometimes both.

Noah sensed the shift and moved closer to her.

His blocks lay abandoned.

One tower leaned dangerously.

Then collapsed.

The wooden pieces scattered across the rug.

Noah flinched at the sound.

Emma instinctively reached to steady him, then stopped halfway and looked at Alexander for permission.

That look struck him.

She was afraid to comfort a child already holding her hand.

Afraid of his authority.

Afraid of crossing a line invisible to everyone but staff.

Alexander hated the line suddenly.

He nodded once.

Emma placed her hand gently over Noah’s shoulder.

The boy calmed.

Alexander watched the effect with a pain so sharp it became suspicion again.

“Have you worked here before?” he asked.

Emma blinked.

“No.”

“Have you met Noah before today?”

“No.”

“Have you met my wife’s family?”

The question startled her.

“No.”

Noah’s head lifted at the word wife.

His eyes searched Alexander’s face.

Alexander regretted the word immediately.

Emma saw the child’s reaction and said nothing.

Again, restraint.

Again, the quality that made Alexander doubt and trust her at the same time.

Mrs. Bell cleared her throat from the doorway.

“Mr. Whitmore, should I call Dr. Lang?”

Noah’s fingers clenched.

Alexander saw it.

“No.”

Mrs. Bell froze.

“But sir—”

“No doctors. Not yet.”

Emma looked relieved before she could hide it.

Alexander noticed.

“Why that face?”

She hesitated.

Then chose honesty.

“Because he just spoke. I don’t think he needs to be surrounded before he understands he’s safe.”

The room went still.

Mrs. Bell looked scandalized.

A substitute maid had just advised the owner of the house.

Alexander stared at Emma.

He should have been offended.

Instead, his chest tightened because she was right.

Noah pressed his cheek against Humphrey and leaned into her side.

Alexander looked at his son.

Then at Emma.

The question in his eyes grew heavier.
