Chapter 10

No arrests were shown.
No violence was used against the pursuers.
Elena’s stepmother was not confronted.
Matthew’s full identity, final intentions, and deeper connections remained unrevealed.
The moment stayed inside the black luxury SUV on the rain-soaked estate road outside Dallas, with forest pressing against both sides, headlights smeared across wet glass, and the pursuing vehicle still visible far behind them.
Elena sat wrapped in Matthew’s black overcoat, torn silver dress hidden beneath it, wet black hair clinging to her bruised cheek. Her breathing had steadied, but her hands still trembled around the sterile cloth and the edge of the coat.
She was not rescued completely.
Not yet.
But she had not been taken back.
Matthew sat beside her in his black suit and open white collar, face half-lit by the glow of his phone and the passing headlights. He remained controlled, unreadable, and far more powerful than she understood.
The driver guided the SUV through the rain with both hands firm on the wheel, speaking low into his concealed earpiece as the convoy kept formation around them.
Behind them, the pursuing vehicle slowed again, trapped by distance and pressure but not gone.
Ahead, more dark vehicles waited at the next turn.
Elena looked from the convoy to Matthew.
Her fear shifted into stunned confusion.
“You control all of this.”
Matthew did not deny it.
His eyes stayed on the rear headlights.
“For tonight, I control enough.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“No.”
The SUV moved through the rain.
The door locks remained down.
The road remained sealed by his people.
Elena turned fully toward him.
“Who are you?”
Matthew finally looked at her.
His expression was hard, protective, and impossible to read.
“Someone they should not have forced you to run to.”
Outside, the pursuers’ headlights faded behind the wall of black SUVs.
Inside, Elena clutched his coat closer.
May you like
She had escaped the men hunting her.
But the stranger beside her had just become the most dangerous unknown on the road.
