Chapter 2

Elena had not planned to get into Matthew Carranza’s SUV.
She had not planned anything beyond running.
The estate road outside Dallas was all rain, gravel, black trees, and distant lights blurred by panic. Her heels had broken before she reached the gate. Her ankles were scratched from wet brush. The silver satin dress she had been forced to wear clung to her like proof of someone else’s decision.
She saw headlights.
A black luxury SUV slowing near the private turnoff.
A driver.
A man in the back seat.
A door unlocked for only half a second while the driver checked the road.
Elena ran toward it because there were footsteps behind her.
Because men were shouting her name.
Because going back meant becoming merchandise with a pulse.
The driver reached for something under the dash when she yanked the rear door open.
Matthew’s voice stopped him.
“Wait.”
Elena fell inside.
Not gracefully.
Not safely.
She nearly hit the floor before Matthew caught her by one arm.
“Drive,” he told the driver.
The SUV moved before anyone outside could reach the handle.
That had been less than a minute ago.
Now the road belonged to vehicles Elena did not understand.
The two black SUVs ahead moved with impossible coordination, one sliding left, one right, enclosing Matthew’s car without blocking it. Their brake lights glowed red through the rain. The pursuing SUV fell back just enough to avoid being boxed in completely.
Elena clutched the overcoat around her body.
It smelled like rain, leather, and expensive cologne.
Matthew watched the rear window, then her face.
“Who is in that car?”
She shook her head.
“I don’t know their names.”
“Do they work for your stepmother?”
Her throat tightened.
“For the man she gave me to.”
Matthew’s expression did not change loudly.
No shock.
No pity.
Only a colder stillness.
That was worse.
“His name?”
Elena looked toward the headlights.
“If I say it, will you take me back?”
His eyes returned to her.
“No.”
She wanted to believe him.
But every adult who had hurt her had said something calmly first.
The driver spoke through his earpiece.
“Lead cars have formation. Rear vehicle maintaining distance.”
Matthew nodded once.
Elena whispered, “You have lead cars?”
He looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He did not answer.
The silence told her enough.
Matthew Carranza had not been waiting for danger.

Danger had found someone prepared for it.
