Chapter 10

The letter’s complete contents were not revealed.

No ownership percentage was announced.

No patent rights were explained.

No hidden assets were exposed.

No financial judgment was entered.

No divorce settlement was decided.

No arrests occurred.

No final verdict was delivered.

The confrontation ended inside Judge Harold Whitmore’s Manhattan courtroom with the sealed letter held above the bench and the entire room leaning toward an answer they were not yet allowed to hear.

Claire Mercer sat upright in her cream suit, brunette hair neat in a low bun, grief hidden beneath a dignity Grant had once mistaken for weakness.

Lena Ortiz stood beside her with the closed legal folder, face calm, eyes sharp, ready for the next move.

Across the aisle, Grant Mercer sat frozen in his navy suit, the arrogance he brought into court draining from his face one shade at a time.

Vanessa sat close to him, but not as close as before.

Her hand no longer rested on his arm.

Her smug confidence had collapsed into confusion and alarm.

Grant had promised her Claire would leave with nothing.

He had promised the company, the money, the future, and the story all belonged to him.

Then the judge opened one sealed letter and asked whether Grant had ever read the original ownership agreement.

Claire looked forward.

She did not smile.

She did not need to.

The judge reread the hidden line, released one sharp laugh, and leaned back in his chair.

“Oh… this is good.”

Grant stared at the document as if it had become a living thing.

Vanessa whispered nothing now.

Lena’s folder stayed shut.

The courtroom waited.

And Claire, who had spent years watching Grant worship the version of truth that made him powerful, finally watched him face the page he had ignored.

The judge inhaled to explain.

The screen cut to black before the first word.
