Chapter 5

Lena Ortiz did not believe in dramatic entrances.

She believed in timing.

When Claire first brought her the old agreement, Lena read it twice without speaking.

Then she removed her glasses, leaned back, and said, “Did he ever read this after the company became valuable?”

Claire laughed once.

“No.”

“Did he ever acknowledge your contribution in later documents?”

“Yes.”

“Did he contradict those acknowledgments publicly?”

“Constantly.”

Lena’s smile was small.

Professional.

Almost frightening.

“Good.”

Claire looked at her.

“Good?”

“Not morally. Evidentially.”

That became the rhythm of the next months.

Claire wanted to collapse.

Lena made charts.

Claire wanted to confront Vanessa.

Lena requested records.

Claire wanted to ask Grant how he could erase her after everything.

Lena said, “Ask him under oath.”

So Claire waited.

She watched Grant grow bolder.

He moved Vanessa into company events openly.

Then onto strategic committees.

Then into the apartment he once told Claire was too full of memories to sell.

He made arrogance look like inevitability.

The morning of the hearing, Grant’s side sent a revised settlement offer.

It was insulting enough to be funny if it had not been designed to erase fifteen years.

A lump sum.

A confidentiality clause.

A denial of operational contribution.

A waiver of claims connected to corporate assets.

Claire read it at her kitchen table with coffee going cold beside her.

Lena called.

“Do not respond.”

Claire asked, “Do we bring the sealed letter?”

“Yes.”

“Do we reveal everything?”

“No.”

That was the hardest part.

The letter contained more than Grant expected, but not everything Claire knew.

Lena wanted one controlled detonation.

Enough to stop the hearing from proceeding under Grant’s false premise.

Not enough to give his team time to bury the rest.

Judge Whitmore was known for patience, old-fashioned manners, and a low tolerance for men who wasted his courtroom with arrogance.

Lena had chosen the sequence carefully.

Let Grant speak.

Let Vanessa show confidence.

Let the judge see exactly what they believed.

Then open the letter.

Claire dressed in cream because black felt too much like mourning.

She was not there to bury her marriage.

Grant had already done that.

She was there to exhume the truth.
