Chapter 6

The courtroom was smaller than Grant expected.
That irritated him.
He liked large rooms.
Rooms where distance made him look important.
Judge Whitmore’s courtroom had rich wood, narrow aisles, an American flag near the bench, and spectators close enough to hear breath change.
Grant entered like a man attending a formality.
Vanessa stayed beside him, touching his arm, her expression arranged into supportive concern.
Claire arrived with Lena.
No entourage.
No visible anger.
No performance.
That bothered Grant more than tears would have.
He expected Claire to look wounded.
She looked prepared.
When proceedings began, Grant’s attorney framed him as the sole financial engine of the marriage.
A visionary founder.
A high-net-worth individual seeking efficient resolution.
A man whose personal assets should not be confused with emotional grievances.
Claire listened.
Lena wrote one note.
Grant leaned back.
Vanessa smiled.
Then Grant made the mistake Lena had been waiting for.
He looked across the aisle and spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear.
“You’ll never touch my money again.”
The judge’s eyes moved slightly.
Not much.
Enough.
Vanessa added, “She doesn’t deserve a single dime.”
Lena’s pen stopped.
Claire did not react.
That restraint took everything she had.
The sentence hit old wounds.
Years of being described as decorative.
Years of watching men praise Grant for decisions she had shaped.
Years of Vanessa calling herself “the woman who understood his ambition.”
But Claire kept still.
The courtroom was not the place to prove pain.
It was the place to prove facts.
Lena stood.
“Your Honor, before further representations are relied upon, petitioner requests the court review a sealed document relevant to the claimed ownership framework.”
Grant’s attorney objected reflexively.
Lena answered calmly.
“It goes directly to the premise Mr. Mercer’s position depends on.”
Judge Whitmore held out his hand.
The sealed letter crossed the room.
Grant’s smile remained for three seconds.
Then he saw Claire watching the judge, not him.

That was when his certainty began to loosen.
