Chapter 4 - Patricia Tries to Save the Party

Patricia Mitchell moved like a woman trained to rescue disasters before they reached the guest list.

She stepped between Vanessa and the nearest guests, smiling too brightly, hands lifted in a graceful plea for calm.

“Everyone, please. This is a private family misunderstanding.”

No one moved.

The word private no longer had power.

Not with Margaret’s phone glowing.

Not with Ethan’s jacket wrapped around his soaked mother.

Not with the board standing behind glass like witnesses in a courtroom no one had announced.

Ethan’s voice was low.

“Do not call this a misunderstanding.”

Patricia turned toward him, eyes softening into practiced maternal concern.

“Ethan, emotions are high.”

“Mine are exactly where they should be.”

Vanessa’s lips trembled.

“Ethan, I was protecting our party.”

He stared at her.

“From a woman on her knees?”

“She wouldn’t leave.”

Margaret looked up.

“You never asked my name.”

Vanessa froze.

“You never asked why I was here. You never asked who I came to see. You saw wet hair, old shoes, and a shopping bag, and that was enough.”

Guests shifted uncomfortably.

A server near the champagne table lowered her eyes, face tense with guilt.

Patricia tried again.

“Margaret, surely this can be handled inside.”

Margaret’s gaze sharpened.

“Inside is where people like you rewrite things.”

The sentence cut through the party.

Patricia recoiled as if struck.

Ethan looked at his mother, suddenly understanding this was not the first time she had dealt with people who turned cruelty into etiquette.

Vanessa’s panic hardened into anger.

“You came here to trap me.”

“No,” Margaret said. “I came here to meet the woman my son intended to marry.”

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Margaret continued.

“You chose the rest.”

Ethan’s face twisted.

The words hurt because they were clean.

No exaggeration.

No performance.

Only sequence.

Margaret came.

Vanessa saw.

Vanessa judged.

Vanessa sprayed.

Vanessa spoke.

Beggars don’t get married here.

Ethan turned toward the mansion doors.

The board still watched.

His brow furrowed.

“Mom… why are they here?”

Margaret did not answer.

Not yet.

Her exact title stayed hidden.

Her power remained unnamed.

Only the implication rested across the lawn.

Vanessa heard the question and became frantic.

“That’s what I want to know. Why is there a board at my engagement party?”

Margaret looked at her.

“Because character matters when families merge with companies.”

Vanessa’s face lost another layer of color.
