Chapter 6 - Vanessa’s Champagne Hand

Vanessa’s champagne hand would not stop shaking.
Even after she set the flute down, her fingers remembered the stem.
They opened and closed at her side, diamond bracelet flashing with every tremor.
Ethan saw it.
Margaret saw it.
The board saw it.
Vanessa folded her arms to hide the shaking.
It only made her look smaller.
“I want everyone to stop staring at me,” she said.
Margaret looked around the lawn.
“Interesting request.”
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“I am being humiliated.”
Margaret’s soaked face remained calm.
“Yes.”
The answer stunned her.
Ethan turned toward his mother.
Margaret’s voice did not rise.
“Humiliation feels different from the ground.”
No one spoke.
Vanessa’s lips parted as if she wanted to argue and could not find an angle that did not condemn her.
Patricia rushed in.
“My daughter has never been put in this kind of position.”
Margaret’s eyes moved to her.
“I was kneeling.”
Patricia looked away first.
Ethan’s jaw tightened again.
Every sentence Margaret spoke made the scene simpler.
And simplicity was destroying the Mitchells.
Vanessa looked toward the guests, desperate for sympathy.
Some turned away.
One older woman shook her head slightly.
A younger man who had laughed earlier now looked sick.
The party had become a mirror and no one liked their reflection.
Vanessa’s face twisted.
“She shouldn’t have come dressed like that.”
A silence so violent followed that even the distant birds seemed to vanish.
Ethan stared at her.
“Dressed like what?”
Vanessa knew she had stepped onto the exact word Margaret had been waiting for.
Her eyes widened.
“I didn’t mean—”
“Like what?” Ethan repeated.
Patricia whispered, “Vanessa, stop.”
But it was too late.
Vanessa looked at Margaret’s worn shoes, soaked shawl, gray hair, and cheap bag.
She could not say poor.
Could not say beneath us.
Could not say unworthy.
So she said nothing.
Margaret nodded once.
That nod was more devastating than accusation.
“There it is.”
Ethan closed his eyes briefly.
When he opened them, something in his expression had changed permanently.
Vanessa saw it and panicked.
“Ethan, please. I love you.”
He looked at her.
“Love without decency is just possession dressed nicely.”
Patricia gasped.
Vanessa stepped back.
The board remained silent.

The phone kept recording.
