Chapter 8 - The Recording in the Bag

Vanessa stared at the shopping bag like it might explode.

“How do we know what’s on that phone?” she asked.

Margaret’s eyes were cold.

“You know.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“You could have edited—”

“It is still recording.”

That silenced her.

Live truth was harder to accuse than memory.

Margaret did not show the screen.

She did not need to.

The bag’s waterproof lining glistened around the phone’s glow. Her fingers, wrinkled and trembling from cold, held the opening steady for a moment before closing it again.

Ethan looked at the bag with dawning pain.

“You planned this?”

Margaret did not answer immediately.

The question hurt.

Not because she was guilty.

Because mothers are not supposed to need evidence against the women their sons love.

“I hoped I was wrong,” she said.

Vanessa seized on it.

“So you did come to trap me.”

Margaret looked at her.

“I came to be invisible.”

The guests shifted.

That sentence landed.

Vanessa had not been trapped by a disguise.

She had been revealed by invisibility.

Ethan swallowed hard.

“You came alone?”

Margaret’s eyes moved briefly toward the board, then back.

“I came as myself.”

The answer was not an answer.

It was enough.

Patricia’s face tightened.

“Yourself in worn shoes and a soaked shawl?”

Margaret looked at her.

“The shawl was dry when I arrived.”

No one moved.

Vanessa looked away.

Ethan turned his head toward her slowly.

“You sprayed her long enough to soak through everything.”

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“I panicked.”

Margaret’s face remained still.

“You laughed.”

The guests remembered.

The recording remembered.

The board remembered.

Vanessa had nowhere to put the lie.

A server stepped quietly forward with a clean towel, hands shaking.

Ethan took it and wrapped it gently around Margaret’s shoulders.

Margaret thanked the server softly.

That small courtesy made several guests look even more ashamed.

Vanessa saw it and hated the shift.

She was losing not because Margaret was loud, but because Margaret was humane while wet, cold, and humiliated.

Patricia whispered, “This is a nightmare.”

Margaret looked at her.

“For whom?”

May you like

Patricia did not answer.
