Chapter 1

My Family Threw My Grandfather Into the Snow on Christmas—Then His Billion-Dollar Will Exposed the Empire They Stole
The wheelchair hit the porch step sideways and tipped into the snow before anyone inside the mansion moved.
My grandfather fell with it.
Arthur Carter, seventy-nine years old, the man who built Carter Consolidated from one delivery warehouse into a billion-dollar logistics empire, landed on his shoulder in the freezing Christmas snow while his own son stood above him.
Richard Carter did not look shocked.
He looked satisfied.
One wheel of the overturned wheelchair spun fast beside my grandfather’s gray suit pants.
The sound was thin and terrible.
Like a machine still trying to run after the person inside it had been thrown away.
I dropped to my knees so hard the snow soaked through my black dress.
“Grandpa.”
I caught him under the shoulders and pulled him away from the metal frame.
His breath came in short, painful bursts.
His white hair was wet with snow.
His pale blue eyes stayed open.
Focused.
Aware.
Humiliated, but not broken.
Behind us, warm golden light poured from the open mansion doors.
Inside, Christmas garlands wrapped the staircase.
Crystal chandeliers glittered.
Relatives in formal black dresses and dark suits stood frozen near the candles and white flowers.
Not one of them stepped outside.
Richard stood in the doorway with one hand still extended from the shove.
“Now you’re where you belong.”
For one second, I could not speak.
My cheek still burned from the slap Sharon had given me ten minutes earlier when I tried to wheel Arthur out of the dining room.
Then the fear left.
Something colder replaced it.
I wrapped my scarf around Arthur’s neck and looked up at Richard.
“He built everything you think is yours.”
Richard smiled.
“He signed everything away.”
Arthur’s fingers closed around my wrist.
Weak body.
Strong grip.
“Let him keep talking, Evie.”
Richard’s confidence flickered.
Then headlights swept across the snowy driveway.
A black sedan stopped at the bottom of the steps.
Daniel Mercer stepped out in a dark overcoat with a sealed leather folder under his arm.
Richard’s smile vanished.
Daniel walked straight toward us.
Then he opened the folder.
“Richard Carter,” he said.
May you like
“That company was never legally yours.”
