Chapter 3

When I entered the mansion, no one greeted me.

That was not unusual.

Carter relatives believed silence was a weapon when used by enough people at once.

The dining room was full.

White roses down the center of the table.

Candles in silver holders.

Crystal wineglasses catching chandelier light.

My grandfather sat in his wheelchair at the far end of the room.

Not the head of the table.

That was the first insult.

Richard sat in Arthur’s chair.

Sharon sat beside him in black silk and pearls, smiling like a woman who had finally moved into someone else’s crown.

Arthur looked smaller than I remembered.

His gray suit hung loosely on him.

His left hand trembled against the blanket over his knees.

But his eyes changed when he saw me.

Just once.

A flash of relief.

Then he lowered them.

Richard noticed.

“Evelyn.”

He said my name as if finding mud on a carpet.

“What are you doing here?”

I looked at my grandfather.

“Visiting family.”

Sharon laughed softly.

“Family calls first.”

“So do kidnappers.”

The room froze.

Richard stood.

“You always had your father’s mouth.”

“And you always wanted his chair.”

That landed.

Good.

I wanted it to.

Sharon stepped toward me and slapped my face before anyone could pretend to stop her.

My cheek snapped sideways.

A few relatives gasped.

Nobody stood.

Arthur’s wheelchair jerked.

“Do not touch her.”

His voice was weak.

But the command inside it was still Arthur Carter.

Richard leaned over him.

“Careful, Dad.”

“You’re already embarrassing yourself.”

I walked past Sharon and grabbed the handles of Arthur’s wheelchair.

“I’m taking him to the hospital.”

Richard’s hand closed around the back of the chair.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Move.”

He smiled.

“He signed medical authority to me.”

Arthur whispered, “Under sedation.”

Richard’s smile hardened.

Then he did what only guilty men do when paper starts failing.

He used force.

He shoved the wheelchair backward toward the open porch.

I tried to stop it.

Too late.

The wheels hit the snow-covered step.

The chair tipped.

Arthur fell.
