Chapter 7

The police were not there yet.
The board was not there.
The court was not there.
But truth had already entered the doorway, and Richard could feel the room turning against him.
He looked back at the relatives.
“Are you all going to stand there while this lawyer manipulates a sick man?”
Nobody answered.
That was the first time the family failed him.
Sharon looked at the keys in Richard’s hand.
The mansion keys.
The company offices.
The private elevator.
The lake house.
The keys he had enjoyed carrying like a crown.
Daniel noticed her looking.
So did I.
Richard did not.
He was too busy losing the audience.
“Evelyn,” he said suddenly.
His voice softened.
That was worse than anger.
“We can fix this.”
I stared at him.
“My grandfather is bleeding in the snow.”
“It was an accident.”
His hand was still extended when I arrived.
I had seen it.
Everyone had.
Arthur lifted his chin.
“Let him finish, Evie.”
Richard glared at him.
Arthur smiled faintly.
Weak.
Frozen.
Unbent.
“He still thinks words can climb out of a grave before facts do.”
Daniel opened the folder again and removed another sealed page.
“Richard, the board received conditional notice two hours ago.”
Richard went still.
“What notice?”
“Notice of authority suspension triggered by misconduct against Arthur Carter.”
Sharon whispered, “Two hours ago?”
Daniel nodded.
“Arthur signed the activation this afternoon.”
Richard looked at Arthur.
“You signed what?”
Arthur’s voice was faint.
“Insurance against you.”
Richard lunged for the folder.
Daniel stepped back.
I shifted in front of Arthur without thinking.
Richard stopped before touching me.
Good.
He still understood witnesses.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“The documents are duplicated.”
“Destroying this folder changes nothing.”
Granting a thief no object to steal is one of law’s small pleasures.
Richard looked toward the driveway, then the door, then the relatives.
Every exit now had eyes.
Sharon slowly reached for the keys in his hand.
He did not notice until she had them.
“Sharon,” he snapped.
May you like
But she had already stepped back.
