Chapter 4

Daniel Mercer had been Arthur’s attorney longer than Richard had been useful.

He was early sixties, silver-haired, calm in a way that made aggressive people uncomfortable.

He did not rush when he climbed the snowy steps.

He moved directly.

That was worse for Richard.

“Daniel,” Richard said, stepping down from the doorway.

“You are not welcome here.”

Daniel looked past him at Arthur in the snow.

“I was invited by the legal owner.”

Richard’s face tightened.

“I own this house.”

“No.”

Daniel opened the leather folder.

“You occupy it.”

Sharon’s hand rose to her mouth.

That gesture was not concern.

It was calculation failing in public.

Richard reached for the folder.

Daniel closed it before his fingers touched the papers.

“Do not make another mistake in front of witnesses.”

Richard looked around.

“Witnesses?”

Daniel’s eyes moved toward the open front doors.

The relatives inside shifted backward.

They had watched everything.

The shove.

The fall.

The words.

Now, for the first time, they understood watching was not neutral.

It made them part of the record.

I helped Arthur sit against the fallen wheelchair.

His breathing was shallow.

His lips were pale.

But his eyes stayed on Richard.

Daniel knelt beside him.

“Arthur.”

My grandfather gave a small nod.

“Proceed.”

Richard laughed.

It was ugly.

“You think he understands what he’s saying?”

Arthur looked at him.

“My body betrayed me.”

“My mind did not.”

The snow kept falling.

Warm light still poured from the mansion.

The contrast felt obscene.

Luxury behind Richard.

Cold around Arthur.

Daniel removed the first document.

It was sealed in a clear sleeve.

No readable text from where anyone stood, but Richard recognized the shape of it.

The original will.

Then Daniel removed company records.

Share certificates.

Trust amendments.

Medical authority revocation.

Board control documents.

Richard’s eyes moved too fast.

“Those were revoked.”

Daniel’s voice stayed firm.

“No.”

“They were hidden from you.”

That sentence changed the temperature more than the snow.

Arthur turned his face toward me.

“Evie.”

“Yes.”

“Remember this.”

I held him tighter.
