Chapter 6

Sharon moved first after Daniel spoke.
Not toward Arthur.
Toward Richard.
Her fingers closed around his wrist.
“Richard.”
That one word carried panic.
Not love.
Risk.
Richard shook her off.
“Do not.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Mrs. Carter, you may want to stop advising him while standing inside an active elder-abuse incident.”
Sharon went pale.
The relatives inside finally began stepping away from Richard.
One cousin backed into a chair.
An aunt covered her mouth.
Someone whispered, “He pushed him.”
That whisper mattered.
Cowards become historians when liability arrives.
Richard pointed at Daniel.
“You planned this.”
Arthur gave a dry, painful laugh.
“I planned Christmas dinner.”
“You planned cruelty.”
I removed my coat and placed it over Arthur’s shoulders.
The snow soaked through my knees.
My hands were shaking.
Not from cold.
From the effort of not lunging at Richard.
Daniel continued.
“The original estate plan remains valid.”
“The company control documents remain valid.”
“The mansion remains in Arthur Carter’s personal trust.”
“Your authority was conditional.”
Richard stared at him.
“Conditional on what?”
Daniel looked at Arthur.
Arthur answered himself.
“Decency.”
The word hit harder than any legal term.
Richard’s jaw clenched.
“I kept that company alive.”
Arthur’s eyes sharpened.
“You drained it.”
“I expanded it.”
“You leveraged it.”
“I protected this family.”
“You taught them to eat what they did not earn.”
Sharon whispered, “Arthur, please.”
He turned his eyes to her.
“You watched him take my phone.”
Her face tightened.
“You watched him fire my nurse.”
She looked away.
“You watched him tell my granddaughter I did not want to see her.”
The silence inside the mansion became unbearable.
Arthur’s voice weakened, but the words did not.
“You were never loyal to my son.”
“You were loyal to the lifestyle he promised you.”
Sharon lowered her eyes.
For the first time that night, I saw fear in her face.
Because Arthur was not confused.
Not rambling.
Not failing.
He was testifying.
Richard stepped closer.
“Enough.”
Daniel moved between them.
“No.”
May you like
“Now it begins.”
