Chapter 8

Sharon did not give the keys to me.

She gave them to Daniel.

That told the whole family what survival strategy she had chosen.

Richard stared at her like she had slapped him.

“You traitor.”

Sharon’s face trembled.

“I am not going down for you.”

There it was.

Not remorse.

Arithmetic.

Daniel took the keys without expression.

“Thank you.”

Richard laughed once.

“You think keys matter?”

Daniel looked at the open mansion doors.

“They matter less than ownership.”

“But they help prevent further trespass.”

Trespass.

The word stripped Richard of the story he had worn for three years.

Not chairman.

Not protector.

Not heir.

Trespasser.

Arthur closed his eyes for a moment.

I panicked.

“Grandpa?”

He opened them.

“I’m here.”

His voice was weaker.

Daniel looked at me.

“We need him inside a car.”

“No,” Arthur said.

I looked at him.

“You’re freezing.”

He gripped my wrist again.

“Not inside that house.”

I understood.

He would not return through the doorway Richard had used to throw him out.

Not yet.

Not like that.

Daniel called for his driver, and together we helped Arthur into the warm back seat of the sedan.

He winced but did not cry out.

Richard watched from the steps.

No one stood beside him now.

Even Sharon stayed halfway between the doorway and Daniel.

The relatives clustered inside the mansion like guests at a funeral waiting to learn who paid for the flowers.

Daniel handed me the folder.

It was heavier than I expected.

Original will.

Control documents.

Share certificates.

The weight of an empire no one was supposed to steal.

Arthur looked at me from the car.

“Evie.”

I leaned close.

“Yes.”

“If they ask you to be gentle…”

He coughed.

“Don’t.”

My throat tightened.

“I won’t.”

Richard called out from the steps.

“This is still my family.”

I turned.

Snow landed on my hair, my coat, my red cheek.

“No, Richard.”

“Tonight, you threw the real owner into the snow.”
