Chapter 3

The divorce began with a missing bank statement.
I found it by accident.
Jason had left his office unlocked, and I was looking for an old insurance file tied to one of our properties.
Instead, I found a folder labeled MBD Consulting.
Madison Brooks Development.
Her company.
Except Madison did not develop anything.
The invoices were vague.
Strategic alignment.
Brand positioning.
Market transition services.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars had moved from Jason’s company into hers.
Some transfers happened on the same days I asked about missing marital funds.
Some matched deposits into accounts Jason had never disclosed.
I stood in his office holding the folder while my hands went cold.
Not from fear this time.
From clarity.
He had not only betrayed me.
He had been building a financial escape route while telling me I would leave the marriage with nothing.
That night, Jason came home late.
Madison’s perfume followed him into the hallway.
He saw the folder on the kitchen table and stopped.
“What are you doing with that?”
“Reading.”
“You don’t understand business records.”
“I understand dates.”
His expression changed.
The mask did not fall all at once.
It slipped.
Then he smiled.
“You think this helps you?”
I said nothing.
He stepped closer.
“No one is going to believe the bitter wife.”
I looked at him then.
Really looked.
At the man who had mistaken my quiet for emptiness.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it’s true.”
“No,” I said. “Because you need it to be.”
The next morning, I called Valerie Chen, a divorce attorney known for cases involving hidden assets.
She asked one question first.
“Are you physically safe right now?”
I did not answer quickly enough.
Her voice softened.
“Then we handle both cases.”
Both.
That word opened a door I had been too afraid to name.
The marriage was not only ending.
May you like
It was being investigated.
